Kind of players you want at your table.

Because of a recent live tournament I came to think of what kind of players I want at the table (NL tournament).

My guesses are:

Weak tight players

Players that are average but play one level beneath you in thinking.

Loose passive calling stations that have no concept of odds.

Which is best?

Of the 3 you described I'll take the loose-passive calling stations so I can value bet them to death. Weak tighties are good too, but they're too often making correct fold against me.

All of the above.

With those reads, position, and occasionally a good hand , a decent player should be able to take advantage of situations on a case by case basis.

Technically these players are the best to have, but to be able to identify strangers that fit that catogry is pretty impossible. My home game is easy in that I know them all so well and know which concepts they understand and which they don't making their ranges easy to identify.
Otherwise weak tight players are good to have, particularly late on. Loose calling stations are OK, but add to volatility, which is something I'd rather avoid in a tournament(unless we are in a rebuy period)

Thats pretty much what I thought. I think you can identify that player 1 level below you easy. If you start noticing you can easily place the player on a hand, make him fold weak hands when you have none, never fall into a trap of his, trick him into showing hands. I know a lot of players locally which fall into that category.

Actually those I like the least in a tournament with limited chips. At any one time they can draw out and you just spent 20% of your chips betting. Or they passive calldown AK vs your AJ. Or 3-4 of them call your raise chasing down. Usually you lose a couple before you win and then your winning less. I dont know everything or if I am right but thats my experience. But all you need is one monster for all of them to pay you off then you RULE!

Yeah, weak-tighties are much better once the blinds get big. I was thinking more in general and with deep stacks than tournament-specific.

I want a rock...

someone I can easily bet off a hand and get out of his way when he's comes back at me.

2nd best would be a guy who gets overmarried to top pair - overaggressive.

people who defend their blinds only with decent hands and then check-fold the flop every time they miss.

Sure deep stacks I will take the passive calling stations but when stacks are short like 20 BB at most I want players one level below me. I can steal more, out play more.
