tell hunting

this situation has come up with me a few times now:

i bet, opponent folds, i muck. opponent asks me a question about my hand. i answer whatever i feel like saying (true or untrue), and then i say "what difference does it make? you'll never know if i was telling you the truth." and then i get this. "it doesn't matter, i just wanted to see how you'd respond."

what could my opponent gain from seeing "how i respond" if he doesn't know if i'm telling the truth? gauge how i look when i said that vs when i've said something that's obviously truthful? that's the only thing i can think of. that, or he's just saving face because he really has no point.

i think you're right on with "saving face".

A lot of people just respond, "I had the winning hand." It's always true regardless of what you held.

"You gotta pay to see em"

This is good. Other guys say "Jacks." Its pretty funny, when they say it for the millionth time in a row.

If they're a reasonable player I'm getting on with OK, I usually either tell the truth or say something else that was reasonably consistent with how I played the hand. Being friendly is more +EV than extra secrecy in the lower limit live games I play (4/8 and 6/12).

If I'm interested in stirring them up a bit I'll either say, "I don't remember," or "Dunno. I never looked at them."

I always say "Don't worry, if you had me beat you definately would have called." It makes em happy and it doesn't really tell em anything.

This is good. It's amazing how much can be accomplished with a little ego stroking/flattery. People are such sheep.

I know it would be difficult to accurately gauge this, but I'd say that a pleasant, curteous, flattering demeanour would increase someone's win rate quite noticably, particularly in lower stakes games.

I agree with whoever advised to say you had Jacks. It nearly always makes sense with any board to say you had Jacks, win or lose.

This is why I love these boards. I now have a million things to say when I'm asked this question for the millionth time.

I usually say "I forgot" or just makeup a nickname for a hand, people are so afraid that they'll look dumb they just go along with it.

"So what'd you have that last hand?"
"Oh I had the old bow and arrow"

LOL, good stuff.

I'm with Yarney. I always say that they wouldn't have folded a hand that beat mine. It makes them feel smart and also allows me to bluff them later.

I like to tell people that I had 72 offsuit. It lightens the mood a bit and makes people laugh, and they tend to stop asking me what I had.
