The Perfect Chipset?? --amounts of each color
 

hey all, i'm buying 700 NexGen chips and customized stickers for 'em.

i'm trying to figure out how many of each color i should get. the tough part is they'll be used equally for cash games and tourneys. also, i want the stickers to have a # on them (although no dollar sign, so a 10 chip could be 10c, $10, or a thousand dollars theoretically)

anyone have any good suggestions for how many of each chip i should get and what # to put on 'em? i can get between 5 and 7 different color chips and want to get 700 chips total.

the color options are
White
Blue
Red
Green
Black
Purple
Yellow

How many players?

I got a set of 500 for .25 NL cash games and T100-T150 tourneys for 6-10 players:

120 .25
200 1
120 5
60 25

I got too many 25's though...I'd like to replace 20 of them with more quarters.

I have a set of 700 too and my distribution works pretty well.

100 white (wish I would have made these blue though)
200 red
200 green
100 black
100 purple

You could probably change 50 purples for greens or whites too.

Edit: I just have labels with pictures on (the Scooby-Doo crew) and no number denominations so we can use them for whatever value we need.

tks for reply. i'll be using em for 1 table cash games and tourneys of up to 25 people (normally less though).

i'm hoping i can strike some balance so they'll be good to use w/my friends that want to play micro games (10c/25c nl), and for my poker friends looking to play larger limit and NL games. they'll also be used for tourneys at least half the time.

no denoms would definitely be easier, but i'm afraid they won't look "real" enough w/cool stickers and no #'s on 'em. maybe i'm too worried about this though

Yeah, you're too worried about denominations. Make a printout with the denoms for "tonight" and go. Four colors is great, five is pushing it for 700 chips. 260/260/120/60, 300/260/100/40 or 300/300/80/20. The last is the best, IMO.

That's from a guy who's bought some JACKED up combos... push those numbers through some tournament structures and a standard .25/1/5/25 cash game setup and you'll probably think it's sane. I like the divisible by 20 because they fit correctly into 5x20 racks and I'm JUST anal enough to care about that stuff. Much easier to count down at the end of the night or when coloring up.

I used to demand denoms on my personal chips but now I want non-denom for cash, denom for my tourney set. The people that ask, "What's this one worth again?" still ask even if it's printed right on them. I like having one set for each type of game because a cash game breaks out when ppl bust out of the tournament.

Why do people INSIST on getting too many different denominations?!?! I just don't get it... If you have to color up more than once in a tournament you're doing a terrible job of organizing it.

IF I were designing a set of 700 chips for two purposes (cash game and tourney) I'd set it up like this:

• Green $25/25c (325)
• Black $100/$1 (325)
• Yellow/Gold ($1000/$10) (50)

3-TABLE NL TOURNEY SETUP
---------------------------------------

30 people each get:
8 Green ($25)
8 Black ($100)
1 Gold/Yellow ($1000)

That's $2000 in chips.. blinds start at 25/50 and double every 20-30 mins.

CASH GAME SETUP

We play .25/.50 blinds in a $20 MAX NL RING GAME

One Table... Buy in for 20 and get:
8 Green ($2)
8 Black ($8)
1 Gold ($10)

You can drop the Golds to $5 in this case if you prefer... Overall this gives you enough chips for about 40 buyins of either tournament or cash game play.....

Even if you get stickers with values ($25/$100/$1000) on them, people will be smart enough to move the decimal 2 places to the left in their heads.... $25 = .25.... $100 = $1...etc

What is the normal betting unit after the blinds. For example, many casinos that run $1/2 NL generally bet in increments of $5.

A problem with a dime/quarter game (though a small one) is that where the sb isn't 1/2 the big blind, you need two separate chips. This means you'll need 4 chips -- sb, bb, betting unit, and oversized chip.

Here are some thought --

If people bet in 25c increments

10c -- 100 chips
25c -- 450 chips
$1 -- 100 chips
$5 -- 50 chips

If the betting increment is $1 after the blinds, try

10c 100
25c 100
$1 400
$5 75 (or 100 if you have to order in increments of 50)
$10 25 (or zero)

If you are going to be playing tourneys w/ up to 25 people you probably need at least 1500 chips. I have played in many and have been organizing our game of 15 for 2 years, we continually fine tune it, but prefer starting off w/ a stack of 40 chips. No fun to play a tourney when everyone only starts w/ 10-20 chips and everyone is constantly asking for change. And it is always cool when it is time to move to final table and you have to ask for 3 racks to bring your chips over. We usually color up twice and sometimes three times in our 2-table 4-5 hour tourney, it gives time for everyone to take a 5-10 minute breather anyway. My 2 cents.

I have denoms from $1-$100 for tournaments. when we play cash games

$5= $0.05
$25= $0.25
$50= $0.50
$100- $1
