Missing girl in Aruba

Is there anybody who feels that the story of the missing Alabama girl in Aruba should be a major national story? It is a tragedy for her family and community, but I cannot quite understand how that makes it a national story, considering that there are thousands of missing persons/homicides every year.

On a similar note, I see NBC devoted a full hour tonight to the runaway bride. If Americans aren't aware of what is taking place in the country or the world, it is easy to see why.

I think it is national news for 2 reasons.
1 it is an international crime.
2 one of the people in jail in Aruba is the son of the Judge on Aruba.

This is on the new where I live every night. The girls father is from Meridian, MS, where I live. Her and her mother are from Alabama.

You forgot the 3rd reason. She's a pretty white girl.

Yup, a big part of it. And the 24 hour cable news networks love to play a story like this to death, it has a tropical island, pretty girl missing "mystery" to it.

Atrocities occur to innocent people around the world every day and the blow dry boys of cable news shrug as they report, but let a blonde young, American girl go missing, and out come the waterworks.

I feel for the girl's family and friends, but objectively it isn't a major story.

I think part of the reason is that she is the second tourist to disapear in a short time span.
