Moving out to vegas to get a real job.

Facts:
Im in school, have about a year left until I get a BS in info sys security, have an Assoc (tech degree) in Computer network systems.

PS. Was told to post this here, because a lot of casino employees post here. Thanks
Currently Im playing poker for a living.
I live in St. louis, and hate it.

Im contemplating moving out to Las Vegas, and getting a job. Im not sure what I want to do exactly, Ive been doing some things on my own, and have found out that I have a talent for marketing/sales etc, and would like to work at a sportsbook (either marketing or helping to run). Basically, I will be ready to move out there, in May of next year. What do you guys suggest I do as far as getting a job? Just move out and hope for the best, or secure a job pre-move. Does anyone have an "in" that they could help me out with? Id love to get something that pays decent, 40-50k, that I can eventually move up in ranks, based on performance, and then supplement my income with poker. Any suggestions?

PS I hate playing poker for a living, and dont think I can do it for too much longer, hence the post.

Have you checked Monster.com and other various sites?

Also, major hotel/casinos have employment sections on their websites. I've looked at Harrah's and it seems pretty decent.

Aye, Ive applied at a bunch of sites on monster, mainly here in St. Louis, and some in Vegas, Ive actually gotten some contract work and a few job offers here, but nothing out there. I did take the contract work, because it wast permanent, so I have some experience in IT. I just dont want to move out there with no job, and no security.

There is an excellent site that has links to all of the casinos in vegas. Each of the casino's websites has an employement link where you can find all of the available jobs.

Forgive me for being glib, but if you want job security, you should consider moving to 1953.

But presuming you really mean that you'd like to have an insecure job rather than be looking for one, that seems reasonable. However, I would imagine (though I don't live in Vegas) that your effectiveness is limited trying to apply from STL, so if you know that moving to Vegas is what you want to do, how about a "working vacation" once the contract ends or for summer vacation (which most contracts are reasonable about allowing)?

Im currently not under a contract. Im still in school, and I can tranfer to somewhere out there, but my lease isnt up until April or May, and I have 4 or 5 weddings that Im going to be in about that time, so I may just move out there then, and man up. Obviously, I dont want "job security", I just mean a job.

If you have two arms, I'd suggest picking up a hammer. Don't know if you've noticed, but they have a lot of people moving there...

Working in a casino puts you on the low rung of the ladder in all respects out there. You'll work any time and any day they snap their fingers. Job security--none.

If you come out here with enough for 18 months of living expenses, you should be more than fine.

Apts will rent to you without a job as long as you can show proof of 3 months worth of payment cashola on hand.

Best of luck!

Prostitution is STILL illegal here, so I don't recommend that route.
