Seems like you guys spend more time talking about money than poker

My friend, said I should come here to talk about poker, that it was a good site to get feedback from other players. So far I think I've asked 2 or 3 questions and no one has been able to provide any real information to my questions.

Most of the posts on here have to do with players dreaming about how much money they'll make next year, what the tax ramifications are, and in general just patting each other on the back for being oh wise poker players,

Just a bit of advice, isn't there a famous saying about not counting your chickens before they hatch? Maybe you should spend more time focusing on poker and less time on your winnings, and in the end you'll see you've actually been focused on your winnings the correct way.

Later, gotta find the answers to some tough poker questions, pretty sure no one on here knows or if they did they wouldn't tell me.

Maybe try the strategy forums? General Hold'em is the wrong place for the information you seek.

Looking over the 2 questions you asked, it looks like you DID get some useful answers.

Take a look at the left hand column. See all those nifty little links to other forums? Try Pot-Limit & No-Limit Small stakes.

Good luck.

friend: I'm not even sure I get it
einbert: lol
friend: but it is absurd, and funny therefore
friend: I <3 absurdity
einbert: me too
einbert: but it really presents a complex political message
einbert: he's demanding all kinds of things from a free internet forum to which he has only contributed 11 posts
einbert: including maturity and free advice
einbert: his demands are simply unreasonable
friend: I agree
einbert: i am just kind of letting him know that, in my own way
friend: he is being a whiney [censored]
einbert: yeah
einbert: and i am countering his own absurdity with the thundercats
einbert: it really makes sense to me

both of your questions got very well thought out and complete answers. I'm not sure what you were hoping for...flopping a full house and a preflop decision usually aren't going to generate the best discussion. Also, you posted in the wrong forum...try SSNL or Medium NL for better advice.

Re: Seems like you guys spend more time talking about money than poker

I appreciate everyone's feedback, First of let me say there are so many tabs on the left side of this website (35 or so) that it's hard to nail down exactly which one I should post in, I guess I'll try the Small stakes no limit and pot limit forum from now on.

Secondly, in response to Dankhank's post My Quote "isn't there a famous saying about counting your chickens before they hatch?" DankHank "Yea, but we are counting our chickens after they hatched" Oh really? I guess that depends on your goals as a poker player, DankHank have I seen you on ESPN playing poker, or on the travel channel playing poker on the WPT or on Poker Superstars, or Ultimate Poker Challenge? I don't remember hearing your name when I've been watching those events. Maybe you have a comfortable living playing online and maybe that's nice for you, but that's not my goal

My goal is to play in the big events, and I don't think I'm going to get there by once I've gained a comfortable living from playing poker sitting back and counting up all my money, patting myself on the back, talking about TAXES????? Who gives a bleep!, just play poker, do you think that when Phil Ivey, Chris Ferguson, Gus Hansen, Daniel Negreanu, or any poker pro got to the point you are at now, they started thiking about taxes and asking questions like, can you really make $100,000 a year online playing poker? I know they didn't, they got to playing poker all they could and learning more and more and talking about POKER (not money) and the money took care of itself, That's my only point. So if you are comfortable at $100,000 good for you. But for others like I mentioned I'm sure they were not comfortable they probably went bust a few times with that money trying to make more and play higher stakes and get BETTER, and eventually they did. And you won't get there by patting yourself on the back so much for being a winning player. Okay so you win, on what level???

I'm coming here to learn all I can to be a winning player, be a GREAT player, in 2 years I want to be in the WSOP (2007), in 5 years I want to make the money and after that who knows, but I know I will never stop feeling like I have more to learn and I won't stop to spend the majority of my time counting money, I don't do that when I leave the Casino, I don't worry about money I worry about poker, I think maybe you should too

As for the Questions I asked, yes you all did do a fantastic job of answering them, I apologize at the time of my post I had not seen those responses so I was frustrated a bit. I got some different answers, but that's good gives me more to think about and chew. Thank you all for responding. And also I didn't mean to be confrontial, I was so I apologize I meant maybe to give you guys a kick in the pants, get a little motivated and thirsty again, I'll admit it I suck right now, I'd even classify myself as a fish still.

Last night I left Winstar with $220 profit, but that could have easily been $220 loss. But I did alot of things you're suppose to do right playing poker. I stole the blinds from position several times, I reraised all in on a semi-bluff and got a guy to fold Kings (which were an overpair to the board, J,9,8) I made a reraise and than folded when i noticed the guy's hands who reraised me all in were shaking like a wet dog, he turned over Aces (and he had Aces 3 of the last 6 hands, I think he got some kind of pleasure showing them) I did other things right, mostly played well excepts for two bad calls. I'm not trying to pat myself on the back I suck. I'm down $1,200 from when I started playing poker 7 months ago, but I'm getting better and I play 30-40 hours week whenever I can, whenever I'm not at work. And if you get too comfortable and too lazy counting your money, I'll surpass you, Good luck ya'll

Perhaps his goals are not the same as yours. Also his real name is probably not DankHank.

But you're probably right. If he hasn't won the WSOP then he shouldn't ever think or write about anything that doesn't put him in the money next year. Even if that means going to jail in 3 years for tax evasion, [censored] it, you aren't going to win the WSOP if you spend 2 hours thinking about taxes! It takes dedication, baby!

Re: Seems like you guys spend more time talking about money than poker

I'm no pro by any means, but if I were, this would be the time of year that I am worrying about taxes. Just like any other profession, you tend to start thinking about taxes right around now. Who cares if they are posting it on this forum or not? This is after all a poker forum where a good percentage of the posters play poker for a living. You can't just tell them to not worry about taxes and just worry about the game. Thats like telling a plumber to not worry about filing taxes for his business and just concentrate on his love for chasing doo doo.

I assure you they thought about taxes like any responsible person not wanting to owe the IRS a lot of money with very possible prison time. Also I don't believe online poker was booming like it is now otherwise they probably would have thought about it too.

thundercat32,

you responded with a lot of energy and thought, plus you are named after the thundercats and i appreciate that. i don't remember the thundercats names but my favorite one was the short blue guy with a bald head. he was like the engineer i think, and did a lot of behind the scenes strategy, even though lion-o got all the credit. and also when the time came the blue guy could handle himself on the front line, with those giant spikes on his shoulders.

but you're right we should always as poker players be motivated for bigger and better things. this site is useful for doing so, but this site is also useful i feel for allowing players to share and compare their winnings and to ask questions about things like real estate and taxes, which in a sense is just counting our money as you say, but it's an indirect way of talking about money and successes, so poker players enjoy conversing about such seemingly boring topics as united states tax law. what i'm saying is, i enjoy watching my bankroll grow and i like wondering about the possible real world implications of having more money in my pocket, and if a poker player can't get happy counting the money he just won sitting there doing nothing, then this game wouldn't be nearly so enjoyable and eventually we'd wear ourselves out worrying about improvement all day.

Re: Seems like you guys spend more time talking about money than poker

Hank Dank,

Thank you, I can understand your curiosity with figuring out the best ways to cover your assests when it comes to taxes. That's a problem I don't have yet. My main focus is on poker and improving.

I've never been to concerned with money. I have a little bit, enough to get by, that's about all I care about. I never been very materialistic. I don't drive a nice car, don't have too many nice things. I enjoy winning, I like to win, I'm a very competitive person. I guess I was just venting a little bit because I was looking for good posts on poker topics that would make me think about poker and most of what I saw on here was about taxes.

I didn't know I'd create this firestorm or upset so many people. I was hoping to challenge everyone to think about poker more, that's all. If I am as one player put it a "Fish" than here is an opportunity for ya'll to have a wide open look into my mind and see exactly what I'm thinking when I play, I've went in the last 3 months from anytime I have a pocket pair I'm raising and raising big to just calling with anything Jacks or lower, to now raising with Jacks on occasion, to All in with Aces, to now just standard raises, from playing hands because I thought they were "lucky" to playing the starting hands according to a few starting hand guides I've found. To now I mix it up and bluff on occasion. I mean you might find some rich guy that doesn't know too much about poker sitting at your table one day, and he could be playing alot like I've been playing or play now and you'd have a deeper insight into that play, if this were a more open forum for discussion, than the place to hurl insults that it's quickly become.

I mean I just broke my hand tonight at work which will no doubt effect my income and I gotta come home and the first thing I read on here, is two insults. Nice!

Hopefully though, Hank Dank myself and you and others can just talk poker and everybody's game will benefit.
