A9- How often am I Behind?

If I was a math wizz I wouldnt be asking!

Holding any A9, how often am I behind? (opponent has AT or higher, or pair)

Assume 3 handed.

Then 2 handed.

Thanks

it depends
(btw, thanks for clearing up what hands are ahead of A9)

They can have 22-88,TT-KK 6 different ways apiece, for a total of 66 hands. They can have 99 or AA 3 different ways for a total of 6 hands. They can have AT-AK 3*16=48 different ways (3 Aces, 16 T,J,Q,K). So there are a grand total of 120 hands that beat you. There are 1326 total starting hands, so the odds of one oppenent beating you is
120/1326=9.6%

The odds of one of two opponents beating you is approximately 1-(1-.096)^2=17.2%. To get an extact answer you would have to use inclusing/exclusion which I don't feel like doing.

It's about 9.8% that one opponent will have a pair or AK-AT versus your A9.

It's about 18.7% that at least one of two opponents will have your A9 beat.

I think this is a situation where reads are more important than straight odds. If it is folded around to you in LP it may be worth playing, but you would want to open raise with it and if you are called you get that sinking feeling if the callers are tight because A9 sin't that good against what good players will call a raise with. If it is re-raised you have to make a tough descision because it isn't that strong a hand.

That wasn't the OP's question though. Who knows what context he had in mind? Maybe he's trying to decide if he should hold onto A9 in a 3-handed 2-card Guts game.

There are 1326 total starting hands (but you hold A-9, so it's 1225), so the odds of one oppenent being ahead of you preflop is 120/1225=9.8%

I was discussing this with my brother. He was heads up at the end of a bar tourney. both had about 13x BB.

I was applying it to a stt itm.
