Hello NL, my name is fishypie

I don't play much nl, but I'd like to get better...

I'm new to the table, but I've seen villain semibluff a FD on the turn and river and call an all in on a paired bd-flushed board when he made his straight for about the size of the pot.

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $ BB (6 max, 6 handed) converter

Button ($779.85)
SB ($403.60)
BB ($479.40)
Hero ($699.40)
MP ($886.20)
CO ($160.20)

Preflop: Hero is UTG with 9[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], A[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]. SB posts a blind of $2.
Hero calls $4, 2 folds, Button calls $4, SB (poster) completes, BB checks.

Flop: ($16) 9[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], Q[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], 5[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (4 players)
SB checks, BB checks, Hero checks, Button checks.

Turn: ($16) 9[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (4 players)
SB bets $12, BB folds, Hero calls $12, Button calls $12.

River: ($52) 2[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (3 players)
SB bets $48, Hero calls $48...

PF.. meh. I would usually raise if I was gonna play it, but I would usually fold it UTG.

Bet flop, raise turn, raise river.

You going for the overcall on river?

This hand would be happy down with us cool boys in the small stakes forum.

Bet the flop, raise the turn, raise the river. And welcome to NL

Re: Hello NL, my name is fishypie

Preflop you can do anything with this hand depending upon how the game has been flowing.

On the flop I almost always bet and then shut down when called. Most of the time button won't have a queen, and the blinds will usually lead out if they have a decent hand. So it's a combination of protecting my hand, bluffing the blinds off of weak queens, and avoiding sticky situations later due to lack of information (like if you check and the button bets, what does he have? He doesn't need a queen to bet there, but he often will have it.)

Normally I'd raise the turn, but just calling has its place as well. You haven't given us enough information to figure out which is better.

The river bet is unpleasant. He got called in two spots on a fairly drawless turn and still wants a lot of money to go in on the river. People that bet the full size of the pot on the river at NL400 on Party have big hands. Your hand is too strong to fold, but raising here would be very dangerous. Even if your hand is good, he may not call a big raise. And I'd expect him to hold a boat quite a fair percentage of the time here.
