Euro,
Never got the chance to read it
Now I'm interested. I think deleting the post may have been more genuis then the post itself. Now it will live in obscurity. How very "indie hipster"

lol thanks. I do what I can.

Sam, I edited it out but actually kept the body of the post saved to file (just in case I wanted to draw inspiration from it for a future thread.)

perhaps I could polish it up a bit and issue it in ininstallments, but I really don't know. you basically said my hipster critique has jumped the shark. at the very least I need to take a break.

Re: Official Indie Starter Kit Thread (Calling all hipsters... sorry euro)

Rough draft of the final list... Im going out for a few hours, are there any major objections? (If not, Ill upload when I get back... btw, if I host it, can I post a link here, or are the legal problems an issue??)

In the Aeroplane Over the Sea - Neutral Milk Hotel
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot - Wilco
The Soft Bulletin - The Flaming Lips
OK Computer - Radiohead
Funeral - Arcade Fire
Illinois - Sufjan Stevens
The Moon and Antartica - Modest Mouse
Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain - Pavement
Keep it Like a Secret - Built to Spill
Doolittle - Pixies (+ where is my mind)
I See a Darkness - Bonnie 'Prince' Billy
Kill the Moonlight - Spoon

First 3 seem automatic.

Im hesitant to go with OK Comp over the bends as an intro, but the group disagrees.

Funeral provides a nice combination of awesomeness and Canadian content.

"Illinois. Top some more AOTY lists. Plz" - istewart.

Moon and Antartica seems to be the consensus Modest Mouse album, even if a few (myself included) like LCW more.

I was gonna go with Slantend and Enchanted, but since I dont really like Pavement, I will defer to JoA and go with CRCR.

Ive always thought Perfect From Now On was BTS's most popular, but it appears Im not alone in liking Secret more, so we'll go with that.

Doolittle is awesome, and I'll put in Where is my Mind? for good measure.

Darkness is a personal favourite, and I want to spread the word.

The last 4 spoon albums were mentioned in this thread, and picking one is damn hard. I've always like Moonlight best.

Big leave outs:

Loveless... is it getting dated? I had this in originally.

Oh, Inverted World...he already has shins stuff, otherwise its in.

TOTBL... No real reason not to include it, just, 12 isnt a big number.

GO! Team...too weird, though still amazing

69 Love songs... This isnt mentioned as often as it deserves to be

Source Tags and Codes...would be in my top 12, but perhaps a little too heavy for some.

Man I'm trying to get into this stuff because I need new music, but I dont' think this is my thing. I absolutely love the Pixies, they are one of my 2 or 3 favorite bands, but I just don't think these other bands are similar. I need my stuff a little harder and more rock and roll than most of this wimpy stuff.

Looks good to me from what you guys have said. You still left off Smith. But he's one of those that I allways wanna pick up but allways forget when I'm in the store. Did you guys ever come to a consensus on the "either/or"/"XO" debate I don't remember seeing it but plan on rereading this thread and picking up a few more that were mentioned but didn't make the cut. Horay for holiday money and giftcards.

I hate the prolific use of "indie" as a descriptor and even I think you're being a douchebag in this thread, flux (and I say that hesitantly, as I usually like your posts).

Like it or not, "indie" has come to reference a wide range of music, some of which is made by bands signed to divisions of major labels (although usually they get their start on a true independent). I've never liked the term, and you clearly dislike its broadening use. Sadly, language doesn't conform to what nits like you or I say, it conforms to how people actually use the words.

Oh, as for the list, I haven't heard Bonnie Prince Billy but the rest looks great. Awesome to see Spoon on there [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] and the rest are all great albums. I don't see why you can't expand it to 15 though to throw Elliot Smith and a couple others on.

Oh, and CMI making a list that includes Pavement? What is this world coming to?

80\'s indie love!

Husker Du - Zen Arcade or New Day Rising
Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
Minutemen - Double Nickels on the Dime
Replacements - Let It Be
Meat Puppets - Meat Puppets II or Mirage
Throwing Muses - House Tornado (although they might not be indie - they sound indie though)
X - Los Angeles

This stuff tends to be punker and more crappily produced than some of the bands mentioned elsewhere.

Also, Guided by Voices, Uncle Tupelo, Mudhoney, Bikini Kill, Nic Cave and the Bad Seeds, Jawbox, Superchunk, Sebadoh, and the Fastbacks are all bands with indie roots who've done some good stuff and haven't been mentioned so far.

Am I the only one over 30 in this thread?

Jack of Arcades 12-31-2005 07:57 PM

Re: 80\'s indie love!

no, soul daddy's a grandpa hipster too. DaveR hasn't weighed in but he's older.

I love Husker Du but I don't really like anthing else you listed except Sebadoh and Superchunk.

Re: Official Indie Starter Kit Thread (Calling all hipsters... sorry euro)

Didn't read everything, but:

Shouldn't be discussing Radiohead at all in this thread IMO. They're completely different from all these other bands. If you're taking indie =! Pitchfork-reviewed (which this seems like), might as well add in Kanye West.

Wilco and the Flaming Lips are probably "outliers" as well.

The Shins has to be on this list.

XO is ES's best album, but I'm kind've a sucker for production. From a Basement I also like more than Either/Or probably, but they're all close.

Are the Smiths indie? The Pixies? Seem to fit in with the other bands here.

Sonic Youth is kinda gay IMO.

Bright Eyes should probably have an album on the list. Maybe they're not top 10 in quality, but they seem kinda quintessential lonely-girl-black-mascara-acoustic-guitar music.

Oh yeah, and Modest Mouse [censored] sucks.

Am I the only one on here that would suggest Elliott Smith's self-titled album over XO and Either/Or?

Meh... I know what I wanted recommended, and I got it. Kanye was not wanted, and radiohead was.

I guess the best way I could have described it was "music reviewed in pitchfork, that is rockesque." I said 'indie' and got the same.

For some reason or another, it seems no one really considered pre-Pixies. I def. wouldnt mind see TQiD on there.
