Isolating the fish, A8s lvl2 50+5

This was hand number 12 or so, and villain had been limping most of them. I had played him once earlier postflop, so I had a slight feeling what kind of player he was.

My question is, is it worth trying moves like this at all? And if it is, is this a good spot?

It should be added that the blinds were fairly tight, so I expected to get headsup unless there was a premium hand in the blinds.

I think its a stupid move, At this point in the tournament you don't even need to be playing A8s let alone raising with it.

Well, the question is if this is potentially good enough to compensate for the risk.

I know this is not standard procedure. When is it a good play nonetheless?

I don't like the raise at all in this stage of the SNG.

Answer to your question is it is never a good play at this point in the tournament.

For the sake of discussion:

On what grounds? Just cowardice? The way I see it, I'm a definite favorite to have the better hand preflop. On the flop, he would do the same move with a lot of hands imo.

I can see three pretty clear +ev decisions, against this kind of player. This is exactly the kind of move you make money with in ring-games (isolating the fish) and I'm thinking that it could be employed more in sngs.

Please offer more of a analysis, rather than just no, not good.

Well, what kind of player was he? There are many varieties of fish. If he is the type that limps in with a lot, but gives up easily on the flop, then I think your play is OK.

On the flop I would bet less, perhaps 150. I would fold to a check-raise all-in unless the player was very over-aggressive (in which case I may have folded pre-flop).

Why in Gods name would you want to lessen the playing field with a suited weak ace? You have no right to deem anyone a fish.

He seemed to be the kind of postflop fish that liked to call a bet and then give up to the second barrel. Somewhat tricky. I think he would have folded on a less bluff-nice flop than QQ8 unless he hit.

Looks to me like you're the fish here. Just because your play worked out in this specific situation does not mean its good.

Nothing wrong with going after a LAG player, but wait till you have a real hand to do it next time.

With A8? No. In this spot? Absolutely not. If he's still around and limping on lvl 5, an isolation play like this becomes more reasonable...
