OK, so I'm a serial offender here...mostly hockey jerseys (Lemieux/Gretzky...and for my birthday, Sidney Crosby) but also Steelers and Notre Dame jerseys in the mix. Is this really as bad as the author makes it out to be? Maybe wearing a military uniform all day has nuked my fashion sense, but I've always considered a hockey jersey to be my nearly all purpose civilian outfit. What say you 2+2?

whenever i see a guy wearing a jersey of a team he is not on himself, or wearing a jersey with another guy's name on it - I immediately think, "loser." It's stupid, IMO.

You get a pass if you're actually going to a game when you're wearing one. But just barely.

I think if you are over 12 you can only wear a jersey to a game. Although I wouldn't. I have thought about getting a Johnstown Jets jersey tho. But I wouldn't wear it anywhere. [img]/images/graemlins/smirk.gif[/img]

The only time an adult should wear a jersey is when attending a sporting event in person (jersey of team actually participating), or when viewing a big sporting event at a party or sports bar (again, participating teams only). People like that douchebag from NY (Stiller? Something like that) from the 2005 WSOP ME are shining examples of how I view people wearing jerseys outside of these parameters.

That being said, hockey sweaters are far more acceptable than basketball, if only because you don't have to wear anything underneath them other than a T-shirt.

Overall, I'd say basketball jerseys are the worst. Here's my ranking (from most to least acceptable to wear in public):

Hockey > Baseball > Football > Basketball

Well throwback jerseys cost in the 250-300$ range if you want a authentic one and the same goes for authentic non throwback jerseys as well. The replicas are cheaper but are still around 70-80 bucks a pop. Its not a very good genarilization.

FWIW, I wear sport jerseys all the time. I wouldn't to an event that was supposed to be formal though but to a party or a gathering I would wear them everytime I could. I like the look of a jersey and find them to be extremely comfortable.

I'll wear my jerseys (#56 Lawrence Taylor throwback and #42 Mariano Rivera) when I'm watching the team play, either at my house or at my local sports bar. I'd also wear it to a game that they're playing. There's a Steelers Nation group that shows up with 50-60 people, and most of them are in jerseys...my fave being the Jack Lambert throwback. Just about everyone in the place wears a jersey. Having said that, I won't wear jerseys until I'm at the bar. I feel uncomfortable wearing them just out on the town.

Guys who wear the wrong jersey to a sporting event (like a football jersey to a baseball game, or a Red Sox jersey to a triple-A baseball game between Marlins and Rockies farm teams) crack me up.

I actually wrote a similar article for one of my websites a few months ago: http://www.nfl-football-jerseys.com/jerseyrules.htm . It has what I consider to be my 10 Rules for Buying and Wearing jerseys. Mostly I just wrote it for fun, not to say what is right or wrong except the part about tucking a jersey in. That should NEVER be done.

Anyone wearing a David [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] Akers jersey has my total respect.

DrCool, what do you think of wearing jerseys of obscure players that are no longer with that team? Example...I have a Bubby Brister Broncos jersey, a John Freisz Seahawks jersey and a few others like that.

I've never actually worn the Friesz jersey. I was so surprised that one actually existed that I figured it might be a collectors item (though not actually worth anything) and it was cheap so I picked it up.

Bubby Brister and John Friez? For something like that I could see wearing them for comedic purposes. I can almost guarantee you wouldn't see any Friez jerseys at a Seahawks game so you would be unique. I woudn't make those your primary jerseys but you would get some laughs and comments if you wore them to a game.

I should clarify that there are rare exceptions where it is ok to wear a kicker's jersey, but to say that you should by a kicker's jersey when you see one is insane.
I have Colts season tickets and my friends and I try to see who can find the most obscure jersey. We have seperate categories for current and formed players. It is a good way to pass some time during TV timeouts. It is pretty easy to find someone wearing a Vanderjagt jersey, a Hunter Smith jersey has yet to be seen.

The reason I say to buy a kickers jersey when you see one is you will very, very rarely see one for sale. In my years of selling jerseys I have only seen 3 kickers jerseys (Vinitari, Vanderjagt, and Akers) for sale and those were in very limited quantities. If a kicker jersey is available for your team it is probably because you have a top notch kicker. I am not saying you should go out and customize a jersey to get Jay Feeley's or Shayne Graham's name on them but if you have a great kicker on your team and you see that jersey for sale you should snap it up.

I am obviously against the consensus here. I find nothing wrong with wearing a sports jersey. I haven't worn my Olajuwon red rockets jersey ever since I met him and he signed it. However I was debating on purchasing a new Rockets Tracy McGrady jersey.

Now when I say this, I haven't worn a jersey in over 4 years, but thats because I never purchased one worth it.

What is the huge crime on wearing a jersey? I mean going to a sporting event makes sense. So if I am reading this right, its wrong to wear a jersey on a non working day? So if its a typical saturday afternoon, and you plan to go eat at a casual resturant, go shopping, do something low key, wearing a jersey is bad taste?

I don't give a damn about fashion but I don't try to look like a goof.

I agree with the other posts, where is all the jersey hate coming from?

I don't see a problem doing it in the summer if it is a funny older jersey. Like being from around Detroit, I have an old blue Grant Hill - Pistons jersey that i wear from time to time, or an old Barry Sanders jersey when i play pickup football sometimes, just cuz it is funny to still be wearing it.

EDIT: this being said, I would never buy or wear a new jersey today.

One of my old roommates used to pretend to be Neil Rackers when drinking with members of the Illini football team to get into KAM's without cover. No point to that story, but it seemed interesting when I saw Rackers name.
