router problems

I have two computers hook ed up to a cable modem through a router. Periodically the router quits working and i have to set it up again to get eveything working. The router isn't losing the setting becasue my password is staying in there. Does anyone have any idea what might be happening here?

It is a linksys. I am not wireless. I suspect that road runner might be doing somethign to me since they sell somehting called "home-networking" that I wasn't planning on buying, but maybe I will have to.

Randy,

About once every couple of hours I lose my internet connection. I must unplug and replug the ethernet connection and it will work fine. Does this work for you or must you reset or unplug your router or modem?

Thank you,

Sometimes just powering off and on the router does it. Sometimes I have to run the set up program. Sometimes it is fine for over a week sometimes a couple of hours. I think when Road Runner flakes out I have to reset the router.

Re: router problems

ive heard of ppl having this exact problem before. i believe the solution was that there was a firmware update that needed to be downloaded.

Re: router problems

RR,

What is the model of linksys. I know that one of my linksys wireless routers is unplayable on party in MTT's, but fine in ring games. Go figure.

Linksys is also infamous for having problems with every few weeks losing "routing" ability. In other words, you still appear to have a connection, but it stops routing you to the cable modem. Firmware update sometimes fixes this problem, sometimes not. If it doesnt, the fix is simply to restart the router. The best solution I've found for this is to go down to home depot and purchase a appliance timer. Set it to turn the router off at a set time every day (Say 6 AM) and then turn it back on at 6:05 AM. Thus power cycling your router, and fixing hte problem of your router having to be periodically reset.

Hope this helps.

Nick
