Have Stars Micros lost their value??

Generally I play a wide variety of MTT's on Stars. With the new 20% payout for the micro tournaments (5.50 and below) do these tournaments lose their value for bankroll building?

I'm still playing them but I'm starting to question how valuable they are anymore. Only final table is worth it and even then it's 5th place and up for goodish money.

Thoughts on the new 20%?

Side note: I do have the bankroll to play higher and generally go to 30+3 MTT and 5$ rebuys (once in awhile the 10).

All thoughts appreciated.

I hate the 20% payout schedule, however it is very easy to cash if you just want to play for fun.

Re: Have Stars Micros lost their value??

Well basically I meant for bankroll building. They used to be easy cash.

Re: Have Stars Micros lost their value??

What did they used to be like? I just started playing stars a week ago, have been playing a decent amount of mtts, and finally doubled my BR with a first place in the $5 rebuy for $2700.

Re: Have Stars Micros lost their value??

Well not all the 5$ rebuys are 20% payout. They switch day to day. One day it will be the normal 10% and the next day it'll be the 20%.

They used to be easy money. The play is still terrible but it's harder to make a good sum of money. First place in a 3$ freezeout could bring you a grand or more with the 10% payout , now it's like 400-500 , sometimes less.

Re: Have Stars Micros lost their value??

Can you explain to me exactly what they changed? They distributed the pay out over more places therefore the top spots don't get as much?

12-23-2005 01:58 AM

Re: Have Stars Micros lost their value??

Oh wait, 20% are payed instead of 10% are payed, that makes more sense...?

JeanieJ 12-23-2005 01:59 AM

Re: Have Stars Micros lost their value??

Right. 20% of the players get payed instead of 10% which means you have to place VERY high to make decent money.

Re: Have Stars Micros lost their value??

I really wish they would split it up more. I can't get a late night $2 or $3 tournament without their "new 20% payout structure."

JeanieJ 12-23-2005 02:01 AM

Re: Have Stars Micros lost their value??

It isn't split up at all. All tournaments 5 dollars and below are 20% payout EXCEPT the Guar. rebuys that alternate every other day as the 20%.

Anybody track the avg number of entrants?

Notice if it has gone up or down since the change?

JeanieJ 12-23-2005 02:03 AM

Re: Have Stars Micros lost their value??

I think it's gone up, though I don't have real stats to prove it.

Which means more money for Stars.

Re: Have Stars Micros lost their value??

wow 20% is rediculous, I just figured since the average person in my rebuy rebought 5 times, they would pay 20% to give a few people some extra buy ins back.

Re: Have Stars Micros lost their value??

Jeanie, I couldn't agree with you more.

Since the new structure began I am trying to keep clear of those tournies. TO many stallers eager to cash with such a high bubble puts me on serious tilt.

12-23-2005 02:59 AM

Re: Have Stars Micros lost their value??

Is there any site that gives the player so many $1,2,3, and $5 tournies at nights like Stars but with a 10% payout. I don't think there is. I know Party doesn't. FulLTilt? Paradise?

hasn't that pretty much always been true for....well...any tournament?

i mean, i get what you're saying, but the real money has always been in the top 3.

Re: Have Stars Micros lost their value??

Well the ninth place in a 3 dollar used to produce like 140 bucks I think. Now it's 19 bucks.

JeanieJ 12-23-2005 03:09 AM

Re: Have Stars Micros lost their value??

Yeah HUGE difference between 19 and 100 IMO. My bankroll is big enough to play much higher than I do but it'd be nice to add on to it. With the 20% I just don't see that happening.

Though you're right, no other site has the selection stars does. I love stars, I'll probably never leave.

Re: Have Stars Micros lost their value??

9th with 1500 entrants is 1.31% or $58.95

9th with 10% structure was 1.50% $67.5 for the same 1500 entrants. That's is far from a significant difference.

It really is only the top spots that are truely effected.

Hotrod0823 12-23-2005 03:18 AM

Re: Have Stars Micros lost their value??

I think it comes down to what percentage of top 3 finishes you have vs how many times you "used" to finish just outside the money.

You are still getting close to the same money for the 10-18 finishes. For 1500 entrants its .78% vs .80%.

Is ALL your money from these tournies coming from top 3 finishes? How often do you finish in the top 3 when there are 1500 entrants? How often did you finish in 180+ before? How often do you finish in 180+ now?

I don't think it is as bad as everyone is making it out to be.

I also hate it. I mean, I don't really care if I cash for like 7 bucks, thats $2 profit. I rather get few hundred more when I win.

Btw. just won $5 freezout for ~1k.

Re: Have Stars Micros lost their value??

I know, it's great, I'm really happy about it. But if I could get more it would feel even better. And I usually place really high or then I drop out rather early.

There were 1054 entrants, and it paid 198. I don't think it wouldn't be bad if it would pay only to top100 or so.

Re: Have Stars Micros lost their value??

The numbers presented in this thread are way off. The differences in payouts are by a small percentage, not like an 700% difference.

There is about a 0% chance this is true assuming equal field sizes.

JeanieJ 12-23-2005 06:16 AM

Re: Have Stars Micros lost their value??

Though the numbers are probably way off (partly due to my exaggeration)... there certainly feels like there's a differnce between the value of playing these now.

You're certainly going to place more but you're not going to make as much money when you place. Are you saying it doesn't make a difference if the payout structure is 20% over 10%?

ansky451 12-23-2005 06:19 AM

Re: Have Stars Micros lost their value??

Obviously it makes a difference. What im saying is that say normally 7th place gets you 3% of the prize pool in a 10% payout. It's not like a 20% payout is going to give you like .5% now all of a sudden. It changes the payouts but not by any ridiculous amounts.

JeanieJ 12-23-2005 06:20 AM

Re: Have Stars Micros lost their value??

But does it lose in value in playing because of the difference (however small) in payouts? You're obviously going to place outside of the final table more often than you'll FT, so by increasing the amount of places and decreasing the amount of money, in the long run you're losing out on quite a bit... right??

ansky451 12-23-2005 06:24 AM

Re: Have Stars Micros lost their value??

It depends.

... Joking of course. It does depend on your placement distribution. If you are constantly coming in 1st (who constantly comes in 1st?) then yes you are losing value. But if you are constantly going semi deep and bubbling, then you are gaining value. So in other words, good players should like this less than bad players.

JeanieJ 12-23-2005 06:31 AM

Re: Have Stars Micros lost their value??

Another Question for you Ansky (while I have your attention):

Would it make a considerable difference to the larger buyin tournaments (lets say 50+5 and above) being as they have a smaller field of players?

I played 3 of the 10k RAs this week, FT the one on Monday, while knocking out JeanieJ in the process (she pushed with AK from the button, I had JJ in the SB, all rags on the board), fields have been anywhere from 1400 to 1900. 9th place paid me $300, not bad, not great, but I'm happy with it.

Re: Have Stars Micros lost their value??

To those who claim that the distribution has changed so massively (like going from $140 to $19 in placing 9th), try to check the payout structure first:

http://www.pokerstars.com/tourney_prize_pool.html

http://www.pokerstars.com/tourney_prize_pool_20.html

In fact, I can't even imagine a $3 tournament that paid $140 for placing 9th (unless it had more than 4000 participants) ... But the new structure actually pays more for 9th with 4000+ participants (1.11% compared to 1.06% with the 10% structure).

ansky451 12-23-2005 04:10 PM

Re: Have Stars Micros lost their value??

I don't have the chart in front of me Jeanie, but I'm sure you can find a payout chart on pokerstars website.

Re: Have Stars Micros lost their value??

The 20% essentially halves the stakes that you're playing.
