Actually, I got an email from a friend sarcastically instructing me not to rob any banks after seeing it on TV.

I'm sure there are ways (obviously there are) but how do you rack up debt through online sites? Only thing I know of is credit cards. I just thought when the money ran out, you couldn't play any more.

This is a dumb question, but how do people accumulate debt through online poker? The only way I know of getting money to a poker site is through a bank account since almost all credit cards dont deal with gambling sites. Anyone?

Good question. My theory has always been that people were getting cash advances against their credit card and using those to fund their checking accounts/neteller, etc. Those will add up in a hurry. The fees are brutal enough not counting the 17% or whatever that gets tacked on every month.

12-14-2005 07:54 PM

Re: Class President Robs Bank after running up Poker Debt

Interest on cash advances is accrued at about 24.99%

Not to mention there is an upfront fee (I think 3%) just to go through with it.

I know this through experience. Not good. But all that debt is gone now finally.

Plus, when I made my initial deposit on PP, I used a credit card. I got a phone call and the Indian fellow said to me that the bank that my Visa was backed by (some bank in S. Dakota), did not allow gambling. Then the guy told me in as many words that they'd "fix that", and basically after about 5 minutes said "OK, everything is fine now."

Whatever.

Anybody know his SN?

As much as this sort of thing entertains me, this is not good for any of us. Daddy is obviously rich and I'm sure this isn't his son's fault, the online poker is to blame.

Easy. Just make a deposit from your bank account when you don't have enough to cover it. Often, the bank will pay the EFT, and you'll be left with negative balance in your checking account. If you have 2 or 3 checking accounts, it would probably be pretty easy to run up 5k in debt.

I honestly have no idea why banks pay these if you don't have enough money in the account, but they do. A couple of years ago, Party took a deposit of mine from the wrong checking account (I had 2 registered with them) and the bank paid it and left me with like a -1200 balance.

"This is one of the nicest kids I've ever met, but his gambling addiction led him to make a terrible, terrible mistake," (his lawyer) told the Morning Call. "There's so much good in this kid. It easily outweighs this one bad mistake."

Mistake? Robbing a bank is a mistake?

"A double major at the school, Hogan turned to online poker to take some of the pressure off his hectic school life, and, according to his lawyer John Waldron, he soon racked up debts of $5,000."

Now THAT is a mistake.

he goes 5K in debt. He robs a bank for 2K +. Yet he's able to post a 100K bond.

makes sense

I asked a cop I knew about this, and apparently bank robberies usually net you like 5K or less. Kind of a departure from movies where you rob a bank and you're set for the rest of your life.

something isnt right there. either that or this kid is just a total moron and thought the more sensible decision was to rob a bank rather than tell his rich daddy that he needed $2781.

Also, he could western union the money off his credit card---easily the stupidest way to incur online debt. I would overdraft my checking account before I would western union money from a credit card...

Kid walks into a bank unmasked and gets away with 2700 while he was 5k in debt? No wonder the kid couldn't win online, he's too much of an idiot.

Class president, son of a Baptist minister, second cello in the Lehigh University orchestra, chaplain's office assistant ... bank robber?

Looks like he is going to be first chair in the stiff cello section.

I am always amazed that people rob banks instead of home poker games. Robbing a bank gets you a few thousand and the FBI looking for you. Robbing a 10/20 home game gets you upwards of $10K and depending on the game the police might not even be called.
