Worst Movie Sequels Ever

What do you think are the biggest disappointments after a good original film?

Just a sample in no particular order, I'm sure there are more that you can think of, or movies that I've missed completely.

Highlander 2 has a -1 on my rating system. And this is where I can't think of another single film that gets 0 (not even from this list!)

The original third Star Wars, the one after The Empire Strikes Back, pretty much killed off my love for Star Wars forever. The light cycles looked fake even at the time, and the Ewoks were truly off the charts crass manipulative uber-saccharine cutesiness meant primarily as an extended toy commercial. True junk filmmaking.

haha, good point, i did expect to at least laugh once during the movie though, and that didn't happen

Re: Worst Movie Sequels Ever

I'd have to define "worst sequel" as differential between the original and the follow-up, as opposed to "absolute worst". For example I don't care how bad Men in Black II is (although it totally sucked) because I had no expectations going in and didn't particularly enjoy Men in Black I.

Based on that - Godfather III and it's not close.

For absolute worst on this list - from what I've seen probably Batman Forever - what a piece of [censored].

because star wars ep 1 was the biggest dissapointment in the history of movies. Not only did we wait years and years for it to come out, but the original 3 movies were flat out amazing.

sure batman and robin was a worse movie than ep 1, but the original batman was mediocre at best, and no one camped out in line for months before hand to see its long anticipated sequal

I really thought Rocky 5 could not lose and am surprised that I am the only one that picked it. Rocky 1 is one of the best movies--I still cry at the end. 2 3 and 4 are less and less real but still interesting. 5 is just terrible, no matter how you might try to find good in it.

DB - is Highlander 2 like "so bad it's funny", or "just terrible and painful to watch?" Never seen it and I really liked Highlander.

There's gold in every one of the first 4 IMHO, but 5 is pants.

My favourite is Rocky 4 myself, as it's really just the best bits - training, and fighting...

It's so bad, it ruins the first one. I'm not kidding.

Which is why I really, really, really hate it, cos Highlander kicks ass bettrn Chuck Norris, and that's going some!

Just move on to Highlander 3 (which is distinctly average but not bum-sweatingly awful), and don't look at the road crash.

Actually Chuck Norris seems precisely the level of star perfect for that material.

After a great movie like The Matrix, how come the absolutely terrible sequels aren't getting more hate? I was so looking forward to those movies, and they absolutely sucked. Also, I agree with Rocky 5, what a let down after Drago in Russia.

Re: Worst Movie Sequels Ever

I thought the first one was a revelation and the last one revealed I'd been hoodwinked.

Seriously, it's hard to imagine any movie could do so much to destroy forever the overall rep of a series. Even Godfather III didn't have nearly the negative impact. I think the Matrix series will always be remembered as something that failed spectacularly and squandered an unbelievable amount of public goodwill. Occasionally as something brilliant that failed, but people will mostly forget the brilliant because it's so tainted by the ending.

And the one in the middle wasn't that hot either.

thats what I voted for, it's always been my theory that THE MATRIX was never meant to have a sequel, but due to the massive success, the sequels were quickly ghostwritten/directed strictly from a money standpoint.

Matrix v. Matrix Reloaded/Rev is such a critical jump in tone, I just didn't see that possible.

Blarg 12-12-2005 10:24 PM

Re: Worst Movie Sequels Ever

It's amazing to me that the series could have devolved so far and become so damn bloated and pretentious, and finally even sentimental. What a waste.

I always had heard the 3 were written together.

I dont hate 2 and 3 as much as eveyone else, sure they wernt as good as the first one, but there werent all THAT horrible. Just another typical science fiction movie. They definately didnt ruin the first one for me.

Hot Shots part deux is great. I laugh my ass off when, at one point midbattle, Miguel Ferrer pops up, and with a huge cheesy grin, announces 'War! It's fantastic!'

The first one is just so different than the other two, the first was a good [censored] movie, how the jump could be so bad to such terrible flicks as the last two.

I still don't know...

I think 2 and 3 could've been condensed into a super tight movie if they tightened up the dialogue and perfected a story line.

the final movie had no conflict resolution, total cock tease.

1st one was actually good stunts, 2nd and 3rd was all CGI, if I wanted to watch a cartoon I would've rented a videogame.

Blarg 12-12-2005 10:52 PM

Re: Worst Movie Sequels Ever

It went on a bit too long for me, and wasn't startling like things constantly were in the first one. It was also heavily CGI. And, frankly, I've seen chases done to death by now.

The first one was full of surprises. The other two pretty much had none, for me. They mostly just redid what we already had seen before, in the original or in other movies.

The thing I liked best about the other two were the Mechwarrior type battle mechs in III, how the swarms of bots looked breaking through that hole coming down into the underground chamber, the big overlord face in III, and parts of some of the fight scenes, mostly in II. Overall, they seemed to gorge on the parts of the first one that were most boring, cheesy and pretentious -- the oracle etc. And I'm afraid I never found the romance with Trinity very compelling or interesting.

Just opinions, but for me the sense of surprise and adventure existed almost entirely in the first one.
