Best Video Game 1988-1994 Round 4

A couple of really close matches this time around. Super Metroid barely edged out Megaman 2 to see it go, and A Link to the past edged out Street Fighter 2 in the winners bracket by only 7 votes.

Sim City, having won two matches in a row including one against the highly regarded X-Com, got totally thwomped by Tetris. And many of the early upsets are rallying in the losers bracket, like Civilization, Mike Tyson's Punch Out, Chrono Trigger, and Tecmo Super Bowl.

Here is the link to the full bracket

Edit: Please note that Street Fighter 2, Contra, Sim City 2000 and Final Fantasy VI all have a bye to round 5 in the losers bracket.

And without further ado, round 4:

Wait, didn't Contra lose to Mario Kart last round? Shouldn't it be in the losers bracket?

SF2 also.

Oh ok, my bad. I was afraid that my 2 favorite games were out. FF6 and Contra.

If Mario 3 loses to Tetris I will cry.

Honestly if you were stuck on an island and could either have Tetris or Mario 3 some of you would honestly take Tetris??

I really wish NBA Jam was a part of this. It would be really interesting to see it go up against Tecmo.

god, I just got nba jam and hangtime, and I forgot how much fun they are, I used to hate them after a while because of the arcadey thing, but they're alot of fun.

Actually, I would take Tetris over Mario 3 in the island scenario. Tetris is endlessly replayable, unlike most of the rest of these games.

The only match that isn't close I voted the other way on (I voted for chrono trigger).

Re: Best Video Game 1988-1994 Round 4

wow, closest multi option poll in the history of OOT probably

I'm still disappointed that Punch out is beating Chrono Trigger though. The fact is that most OOTers will probably vote for the game that they've played before.. and not many have got to experience the masterpeice that Chrono Trigger is.

I acnt believe this, but I completely disagree with all but the top one.

I feel alone.

the 'endless replayability' of tetris is a ruse. you would get sick of it and hit personal/human limits of play really quick. it would be a lot easier to make creative 'sub-games' of mario 3 by doing stuff by setting certain goals or putting restrictions on your play actions.

How many times did you guys stab yourselves in the eye?

Edit: I got all 7/8 characters in FFIX having an attack that did 9999 damage without limit breaks, and Amarant I got to about 9k, when I realized his attack would never do 9999 damage even at level 99 because I didn't stat-max him the whole game.

Edit 2: To put it in perspective, the option ultimate boss only had 65,535 HP.

Hope you don't mind me adding it here. Not sure it deserves it's own thread. Plus all the gamers are going to be reading this thread anyways.

BTW, I vote NBA Jam. BOOMSHAKALAKA!!

it might be harder in the end game with red wizards

i've heard stories of people letting characters die intentionally and beating it with less than a full party though

i was crazy about video games when i was younger

I can speak from personal experience that this is not true. The only reason I stopped playing Tetris is the pain it caused my wrists.

There's a site that has a FAQ for different levels of "perfect games" for FFVII. The highest level perfect game seems almost impossible to attain. You have to have the maximum number of every item in the game, mastered every materia, max gil, etc. I got to one of the mid levels.

My big feat: beating Tomb Raider with only the pistols.

How do you kill the guys in armor that you can only hit from behind? I know there are a few rooms that will only open when you kill them, same with the wizrobes I think.

someone find the link of the guy where it took him only 10 minutes to beat SMB3. It is the coolest thing you will ever see (Apparently I have no life).

Oh looks like the wand hurts darknuts and bombs for the wizrobes. I can't imagine killing the blue wizrobes with bombs. Absolutely hardcore.

I am sorry Chrono Trigger. I [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] you, I really do. You are my favoirte RPG of all-time. But I can not vote for you. It's hard to explain. We just have to move on from here....
