Re: as if you needed areason to fear him...
I can't help but wonder why? Wants to be a hero/he's an action junkie. He's just a big kid trying to play cops and robbers. Or he actually gives a [censored] about the community.
My guess is big kid playing cops and robbers. the real answer to why is probably a simple as "because he can". |

Shaq's SportCentury special is going to cover an entire season.

Re: as if you needed areason to fear him...
Shaq is my favorite professional athlete, and I'm not even a basketball fan.

And I can't wait to see if this lasts as long as his other brilliant side jobs...

There are numerous examples of Shaq being generous that you don't hear much about. A couple I can remember offhand... - After at least one, and maybe two, of the Laker titles, cop cars were destroyed during the celebration. He paid for the replacements. - A special needs person who worked at Staples Center was going to be let go, Shaq paid the man's entire salary. There are others that I can't remember, but he really is a generous guy. |

Wasnt mentioned in the article but between police academy training and ride alongs and what not, he has put in over 1600 hours of training to be able to get this position. He has also stated numerous times that once he is done with Bball he wants to be elected sherrif somewhere.

Re: as if you needed areason to fear him...
I've gotta say, the about face this guy has made in my esteem is unbelievable.
I was a Lakers fan when I was a kid, but that ended when he went to LA because he always struck me as a guy who cared more about rap than free throws (you get my point...). Over the years, I've come to understand that he isn't the unprofessional, irresponsible guy I thought he was. He obviously cares about people (see the examples listed up the thread), shows a gratitude for his gifts ("I've won the athletic lottery a couple of times") and in an industry where rich people constantly find new things to bitch about, has become an icon of reason and sanity. He's a lot smarter then I gave him credit for, glib in a clever way, savvy with the media...he's doing everything right. I'm a casual basketball fan at best, but Shaq is undoubtedly amongst my favorite atheletes. He combines god-like talent with remarkable humanity, and is living a fuller life and broader scope of experience than most of us can dream of. This is just the latest example of all that. Shaqtacular. Gary |
