Best Video Game 1988-1994 Round 3
Another day, another round down. I'm sure many will be disappointed to see some of these games be gone... I personally am upset to see Star Control 2 go 0-2. 8 great games gone, only 24 remain.
Remember, the complete bracket is here. So, without further ado, the matches: |
Re: Best Video Game 1988-1994 Round 3
Well, I guess we'll see which under appreciated game has the better fanatics in the XCom v. Chrono Trigger match up. I'm also anxious to see SC2K bite the dust now that it's up against a game that everyone has played. I'm curious for the results of FFVI versus Mario 3, and to see if Tecmo survives.

Re: Best Video Game 1988-1994 Round 3
I love Mario Kart and all, but there is no way Contra can lose. Mario 3 and FF6 should be the closest match this time.

Re: Best Video Game 1988-1994 Round 3
god, megaman 2 against super metroid?
talk about ripping my childhood in half there. oh well, metroid it is. forgive me quickman. |
Re: Best Video Game 1988-1994 Round 3
Wow, a lot of tough choices here. Now that most of the weaker games have been knocked down to the loser's bracket, the winner's bracket matchups are tough. It's heartbreaking to force me to pick between SF2 and Link to the Past.
Glad to see another easy matchup for Tetris. EDI: It's fun to try to visualize the Punch Out vs. Mortal Kombat battle. |
Re: Best Video Game 1988-1994 Round 3
Contra losing to Mario Kart is a travesty.
I absolutely love mario kart, but the SNES version has nothing on Contra. I think the N64 version is what too many people are basing this on. Contra is the best game of its time. |

These poll's are forcing me to make harder decisions than I'm normally used to making in everyday life. A Link to the Past vs. Street Fighter 2 is a super heavyweight bout that makes me want to vomit. |
Re: Best Video Game 1988-1994 Round 3
Well, it absolutely didn't deserve to be on this list. Unfortunately, it was matched up against two awesome games that not enough people played in the first two rounds. I bet if you put Myst on this list it'd get a similar amount of love - wins against anything except the games that have been played as much as it has, in spite of the fact that it sucks.

[/ QUOTE ] You really think that the N64 version of Mario Kart is better than the original? Wow. I'm not huge on Mario Kart (although my roommates and I have been playing a lot of Double Dash the past few weeks), but I was under the impression that it was generally understood that the SNES one was better than the N64 one. |
Re: Best Video Game 1988-1994 Round 3
dud you really should check out the DS version, its like a badass combination of the super nintendo one and the n64 one, sooooo great.
|
Re: Best Video Game 1988-1994 Round 3
my voting for mario kart was stricly on playing battle mode for three years on snes and perfecting the art of shell jumping.

Re: Best Video Game 1988-1994 Round 3
How is it possible that Zelda 3 is losing?!?!??!?
|
Re: Best Video Game 1988-1994 Round 3
what the hell... okay, fess up, who did it??
that's just kinda awful. edit: to sf2? what the hell!? god, come on. |
Re: Best Video Game 1988-1994 Round 3
I think it's more of a travesty that FF6 is losing by a wide margin. SMB3 is a great game, but the depth and story that went into FF6 clearly makes it the winner in my book.

Re: Best Video Game 1988-1994 Round 3
okay yup, that seals it... its a bunch of old people here.
sorry, but you cannot put smb3 over damn near any final fantasy... maybe, MAYBE mario 64.. that was groundbreaking. but smb3, ridiculous. |

This game blew away every other game of it's time. Play SMB3 then play any other NES game and tell me it looks like they came from the same console. I vote SMB3 all the way to the finals |
Re: Best Video Game 1988-1994 Round 3
I will actually take that as a challenge, and post some ss of games that look better than smb3.
and smb2 was far better in my opinion, more out there, with different style characters. final fantasy six was a far more enveloping experience, but hey I guess some people just dont like rpgs. |

Re: Best Video Game 1988-1994 Round 3
haha, okay.
because smb2 reinvented the formula, a formula which smb3 hearkened back to? 2 was much more innovative. I beg you to tell me how smb3 was groundbreaking.... other than graphics, as I feel that anyone who plays old school games shouldnt give a [censored] less about graphics. |

SMB3 wins because it was an actual Mario game, not a renamed insane Japanese game (SMB2).

The items were cool, but by that time had been done by other platformers, and the warp thing was in the original smb. how can you guys seriously not like smb2? do you just despise anything different? sry, I dont get it. |
Re: Best Video Game 1988-1994 Round 3
To this day, the only musical instrument that I know how to play is the Ocarina of Time.
Yes, I know its a different game. |

It's a graphics and storyline hack of some batshit insane Japanese game that would've sold maybe three copies here if not for becoming a Mario game. |

Re: Best Video Game 1988-1994 Round 3
Why are the votes so split between Chrono Trigger and X-Com: UFO Defense? Chrono Trigger is the best RPG on SNES and is easily a top ten RPG of all time, if not the best of all time.
|
Re: Best Video Game 1988-1994 Round 3
I agree. I'm not too big into RPG's but Chrono Trigger is bomb. It's probably #2 RPG for me behind FF7. Final Fantasies for SNES where great too except Final Fantasy Legends I think it was (the crappy one that always sold for like 10 bucks).

[/ QUOTE ] X-Com is arguably the best game of all time. Great plot, interesting base design/resource management, excellent turn based combat, good graphics for the time, and the whole game just had a great feel to it. Read Blarg's post on the game in the other thread, he says it much better than me. X-Com is a better resource management type game than Chrono Trigger was an RPG. |

Re: Best Video Game 1988-1994 Round 3
I don't know how you would do multi-player, but that game or any game with a (very) similar combat system would be great.
It would be challenging to try to make something like that work, since a solid amount of your time is spent in resource management too. Perhaps you could have the resource management parts timed, like chess clocks time players or something. You know, now that I remember, they did do a very brief online version, one of those kind that would be playable for just a short time, not a full on battle. Supposedly it missed the mark. It wasn't one of their regular series iterations. Heck, it might even have been e-mail, I can't remember. But damn, those aliens were cool and scary and the combat was good. I actually got all excited when I heard they had come out with a new X-Com a couple months ago, but like virtually every sequel, it got really bad reviews. (Only the second got decent reviews.) I kinda knew that would happen, as they've tried all kinds of variations on it in sequels. The problem is, they were all kinds of variations! The original model was basically flawless, and the variations all dragged it down. If they came out with a new updated X-Com that was pretty much just like the original, I'd happily get it. |

splashpot, i totally agree. While SMB3 is an excellent game, FFVI is the the best RPG ever made (I'll accept arguments for FFVII). The best gameplay, amazing story, amazing side quests. It just didn't get any better than this game. How dare it lose so badly to a decent side scroller.

In the end, nostalgia over a mainstream game beats nostalgia over a classic rpg, it makes sense. |
