nyc housing question
 

im taking a class in industrial budgeting and have to make a profit plan for myself. how much does a studio apartment in manhattan cost? figure some place like murray hill. also, what areas are similar in price to murray hill? id be splitting the studio so id probably want it to be biggish

Eh, I know someone on E28th, which I guess is Murray Hill, that pays $1200 for a studio

per person or for the whole thing? would $1500/mo be enough for 2 people to live in sharing one bed? most people pay around ~$1200/mo/person out of college right?

Minimum 1,200 for anything you'd be willing to spend more than an hour in - this refers to both the interior and the neighborhood.

Not sure about M Hill - never looked for a place there - but if this important to you, PM me and I'll give you an answer to within 10%.

If two of you are splitting the rent you ought to at least look at a loft - these are typically in creepy neighborhoods (not dangerous, just ugly . . . factories, etc) but they are very spacious and parking is often reasonable if not free. (It can cost up to 400/month in some areas).

You may also want to consider either DUMBO or Brooklyn Heights (both in Brooklyn); neither is cheap but both are a little less exp. than Manhattan and both are 7-10 minutes from Manhattan by subway.

My friend has a union square apartment that is slightly bigger than a studio that he pays $1700 for.

None that I know of.

NYC has a salary structure that sounds insane to anyone who doesn't and never has lived there (secretaries that DON'T put out often make 45k+) but . . . 18k/year for rent ?

(The 45k is gross take home; a single person wd be lucky to clear 65% of that after NYS tax, NYC tax, etc. which would mean half their take home was going to the landlord)

If you wish to pay more you'll have absolutely no trouble finding an agent who will show you one that costs more - but 1,200 gets you a totally acceptable place and 1,500 gets you a really nice one.

Remember, Dorothy - you ain't in Kansas anymore.

Heat is free in virtually all apts. but elec isn't - and our elec ain't cheap.

Don't forget to account for a cable bill of ~ 100/month for TV and internet.

Also remember the $4.50 (or higher) gallon of milk from the corner market when you run out. The nearest supermarket might be a mile away.

It's a very expensive place to live; rent is high but not insanely high in terms of % of income.

But it's not all bad; NYC has some of the finest $12 cheeseburgers you'll ever eat.

when I did studio living I did the Futon -

in retrospect, I should have done what I did in the dorm room and built a loft -

I seriously doubt that the longest distance between two supermarkets in Manhattan is one mile.

I have a friend in a studio on 22nd and Lex. She pays $1700/month.

You will not find a reasonable studio in Murray Hill for anywhere close (% wise) to $1,000. Start thinking closer to $1,500. If you want to pay $1,000/month, find a roommate and split up a really cheap one-bedroom somewhere. The days of $1,000/month per person in a good location in Manhattan are pretty much gone.

To another poster: if you EVER need to walk a mile to a supermarket in NYC, move. You're not living in the right neighborhood. In fact, if you need to walk more than 10 blocks to a supermarket, you should move.

Not sure if you've been in a studio lately, but they're generally not bigger than 400-450 square feet. If you're going to sit home all day and play poker, you really should consider a roommate. If you don't want to do that, you should also consider not living in Manhattan.

I paid $1800 for a Studio in the Flatiron District/Gramercy - about 600 square feet

Just re-read your post. You're SPLITTING the studio. You are CRAZY if you think that can work. Unless you're splitting it with a cash-paying dog, you need a 1BR.
