Ordering \"A Beer\"
 

On TV all the time you hear people sit at the bar and ask for "a beer". This is ludacris, as myself, and anyone I've ever seen in bars, clubs, restaurants, etc orders "a newcastle" "a corona" "a bud light" and so forth.

However, in casinos, when playing poker, I often notice a player just ask for "a beer". I know of no other setting where people ask for "a beer" without specifiying a brand.

Does anyone else notice this?

this is much more common in other parts of the world, where bars often only have one type of beer. fairly common in amsterdam, where you would order beer by the size, not that brand.

I think i have noticed this at the trop or taj in this country. but I think asking for a bud seems to be more common as the default beer.

when I'm playing at foxwoods and the waitresses come around like once every hour I'll often just order a beer, because really I'll settle for any beer and if I try and get fancy it will probably take another hour to get said special beer. Hence 'I'd like a beer' is my way of saying 'I don't a [censored] what kind it is just give some beer!'

I find this so strange. How could you not care what kind of beer? Surely you would choose, say, a good beer over Bud Light?

foxwoods is a special case as the ohnly free beer comes in 12 oz cups and you get to choose between bud, bud light, and heinikin. I really don't care too much for any of those beers so I just take what ever they have free and hence I just order 'a beer'.

Things are different at other casinos where you have a decent choice of free beer.

Also, when you see it in movies/TV it's because they don't have a product placement deal -- so when the beer arrives, the label is disfigured so you can't read a brand name.

Off on a total tangent -- the movie "Cast Away" would have been ridiculous if instead of saying FedEx they said "generic express postage carrier." Because of their reliance on a brand name, a lot of audience mebers got it in their heads that the film was just one big commercial for FedEx. Ironically, the filmmakers got NOTHING from FedEx, not a penny. There was no product placement, no advertising. Zemeckis just wanted it to be realistic, rather than making up some fake, goofy-sounding bogus postage service.

I don't know why I brought that up; I was thinking of "Cast Away" earlier today I guess.

yes, at foxwoods I just say "light beer", and I know I'm getting a bud light. If they served miller lite also I would specify.

PJ: I am stunned that fedex didn't get anything for that. I would have thought there would be a fedex/ups/dhl bidoff.

did FedEx at least donate the plane etc for filming? I mean how did they get all the shirts and stuff?

Yeah, all of the props were donated by FedEx. They knew they were getting good publicity out of it, so they'd ordinarily pay -- but Zemeckis/Fox would have none of it. So no money was exchanged, but they just helped each other out; FedEx gave Fox planes and props, while Fox gave FedEx free advertising.

At sporting events you generally order "a beer" or more precisely "beers"

Hi TP,

At the Taj the waiter was at the other end of the table, I motioned to him and asked what beer they had? He saw me and replied with "Beer?" and began to write something on his pad-presumably "beer."

Needless to say, the beverage he brought me sucked.

At the Trop all you can orderis "a beer" I have never able to figure out what kind of beer it even is, although I think it's something like Coors Light. It comes in a 8 ounce plastic cup.

I don't know why i play there instead of the Borg.

It may have been "advertising" but how good was the exposure they got? Sure, FedEx was all over the screen, but they weren't exactly portrayed wonderfully.
"We can not afford the luxury of not looking at the clock" (or whatever the exact quote is) as TomHanks is shouting down the employees in the Asian start up office.

I think asking for "a beer" might also be sort of a relic from the past, as well. I was talking to a American beer company exec, and he said that thye still pay for tap placement on the end of the row of taps for when patrons just ask for "a beer."

You're right in some regards, but I guess I would point out that their plane crashed, its sole surviving employee was stranded on a desert island for 4 years, he was eventually rescued, and he Sill Delivered The Package To Texas!
