Atlantic City Newb Questions

I have to drive up to Monmouth County on Thursday for a court date, and as my next exam is not going to be till the end of next week I was thinking of staying in Atlantic City Thursday and Fri nights.

What casinos should I be looking at for NL Hold' Em games (I do not play limit)? With the BR I'll have on me I'll probably be looking for 1/2 and 2/5 games. Also, where should I look at staying as far being a nice mix of being not-too-sketchy of a place(hey I'm in college my standards for living arent that high yet), near stuff to do, and some what economic?

Any other pointers you can give me about AC in general or casino/hotel staying (I just turned 21 last weekend) are also greatly appreciated.

BTW I used the search; it sucks.

You're correct that the search sucks.

As for places to stay that are cheap (perhaps someone should add that section to the AC wiki page), I've stayed in Absecon once -- tons of cheap places, some of them a bit tacky, but nowhere where i feared for my life or anything.

I can't help as far as accomodations are concerned, but you can definitely find good 1/2 and 2/5 games at the Taj Mahal. Given that the room is a lot larger than many of the others, they usually have many games going, and they usually start games when the waiting list begins to form. The Tropicana should also have multiple games going, and is one of the more popular rooms.

The Showboat House of Blues room is known for having games with awful players, but they have fewer games going. For example, I went on a Friday night, and there was only one 1-2 NL game going, and nobody was getting up from the table, so I left and went to the Taj Mahal.

The Borgata probably has good games going too for your needs, though they can tend to have higher waitlist times. The other bad thing about the Borgata is that it's not near any of the other poker rooms, though it is the nicest hotel by far. Someone here said they have a $79.99 room rate for 4 hours of play, though, so you might want to look into it.

Even though I've never been to the Taj before that's probaly your best bet. It's got a big poker room and their guest rooms shouldn't be to pricy. The Borgata is nice but rooms start at $150. This is right around the corner too, and on a weekend so your prices are probaly doubling as we speak..

If your on a budget I'm not sure it makes sence to stay somwhere cheaper without a good poker room. You could stay at Bally's or such for cheap but then your spending money and time getting to a good poker room. It's going to be cold as balls out and walking the strip at night is pretty depressing during the winter. $5+ bucks a pop for a cab.

I may be a donk, but I had a tough 1/2 NL table at the house of blues a few weeks ago.

Also, if you get a prostitute, make sure its not a dude.

The Tropicana is your best bet for sheer volume of 1-2 and 2-5 NL games.

check out the 2+2 mag this month. Its got a whole review of all the good card rooms including what games and limits are spread as well as many other details you might be interested in.

As far as Absecon goes, I stayed there once. The drive is less than 10 min and totally worth it if you cant qualify for a poker rate at one of the casinos.

Places in Absecon are hit or miss I have stayed at the Days Inn, it was OK. There is also a new Knights Inn just over the bridge past the Borgata that seemed to be in pretty nice shape

FWIW, I found even the poker rate at the Borgata to be more than i wanted to pay. (They quoted me about $100 i think.)

I really need to save up a bankroll so i can play high enough to make these trips pay for themselves. :-D

During the week (Sun. - Thurs.) the Borgata rate is $39 if you play for eight hours, $59 for five hours.

Re: Atlantic City Newb Questions

That article is helpful, but it contains some inaccuracies. For example, it mentions a bunch of games at the Showboat, which is a little misleading, because many times the games are not spread. In all the times I've been there (Friday/Saturday nights) I've never seen a 2/5 NL game, and I've never seen stud there, either.

Additionally, I am pretty sure that the Showboat's Sit & Go's, and the Taj Mahal's are shootouts - not top 3 payouts. I know for a fact the Showboat's were shootouts as of a month and a half or so ago (though one of the dealers told me they often make deals at the end).

Interesting.... I was at HOB a few weeks ago as well and noticed it was much tougher and tighter than the first time I went in the summer, when it was full of loose, passive, horrible players. My friend was at the next table (also $1-$2 NL) and the whole table was full of rocks. Much different from its earlier repuation as having "the worst players in AC." Is this a trend?

Re: Atlantic City Newb Questions

Showboat still has generally weak passive players, but as with any table you ever sit down at there sometimes will be good players. I was there a few weeks ago and I was playing with a guy I have played 10-20 NL with before and another guy who I have played 2-5NL with many times..... that was not a good game for the average 1-2 players, that being said it is "usually" very soft when I am there....and even softer when I am not

Re: Atlantic City Newb Questions

You ever see this old guy at HOB, looks real out of it...? white guy in his 60s maybe... unshaven, rumpled clothes... every time the flop comes out he stands up and bends over to get his face about 6 inches from the cards like he can't see... plays real sloppy... chips all over the place... makes $25 bets into raggy flops when the pot is only $8... seems to catch amazing suckouts when he stays in... but last time i was there, he finished up about $600! Was it all an act? Anybody recognize this guy...?

Borgata had at least 6 1/2NL tables going when I was there 3 weeks ago, but that was on a very busy Sunday. They also had 2 or 3 2/5NL.

The same Sunday HOB had 1 1/2NL going, the rest were limit and a Stud, (about 8 tables total), bu that was earlier in the day.
