i dont know if that first reply was deleted or my computer is screwed up, but i dont think it was right. pawn takes f5 messes it up, i tried that already.

Re: somebody solve this chess puzzle for me

pawn f4, move bishop, then back to mate when black pawn moves.

My solution

Damn this was a hard one!

Originally I posted pawn @ f4
1.Be6 g5 2.Bf7# but black just plays 1...gxf5 and it doesn't work

But this does - pawn @ h2
1.h4! to cover g5 1...gxh3 e.p forced 2.Bxg6# now that the Rook covers g6

Because white doesn't have any pawns in the first, and adds one in the second?

there appears to be more than one answer unless somebody can tell me why Qa7 doesnt work?

Re: My solution

1. Qa7 f1=Q 2.Qh1+ Bh2 (2.Nf2+ Qxf2; 2.Rh8+ Bh2) right?

1.Qb2 f1=Q 2.Qh8+ Bh2, other checks are blocked, right?

EDIT: Wait: 1.Qb2 f1=Q 2.Ng3#; 1.Qb2 f1=N 2.Qg2#; 1.Qb2 Bh2 2.Nxf2#; 1.Qb2 Kh2 2.Qh8#

Success!

Don't worry, I'm sure you would have gotten it right if you had read the letters and numbers on the side of the board ;-)

Thanks for posting the puzzles though. Always good to keep the calculating skills sharp.

This is why chess puzzles piss me off:

White adds a Pawn and mates in two

[/ QUOTE ]

Does white move first?
Are the black pawns moving north or south?

Maybe there are some standard rules to chess puzzles of which Im unaware, but assuming the black pawns are moving south and white moves first, white has an available checkmate: Qg4.

Edit: Ohh i get it.. "adds a pawn"

Qb1.

chess problem standards / conventions

Unless otherwise indicated:

- You are seeing the problem from white's perspective (meaning white is moving north / up the page and black is moving south / down the page.) This is the case 99% of the time. If the diagram has coordinates, remember that a1 is ALWAYS on the white side of the board, at his left corner.

- White moves first. This can be indicated by a 1.? or a white dot. Black to move first can be indicated by 1. ...? or a black dot. The goal should be stated: "White to move and checkmate in two moves," "White to move and win (usually force a game-winning advantage," etc.)

Hope this helps.

ScottieK
