Varkonyi Faces Juha Helppi at Bottom of Ocean Today

I apologize but I am rotfl.
Varkonyi Faces Helppi at Bottom of Ocean

It's Just An Example of "Extreme Poker"

InterPoker.com is taking poker to places where people normally don’t play, and it's starting 20 feet underwater at the second annual Caribbean Poker Classic on the Caribbean island of St. Kitts.

Today, Juha Helppi and World Series of Poker champion Rob Varkonyi will don state-of-the-art scuba gear and take seats around a table siting at the bottom of the ocean.

Players have been warned that during the tournament they may encounter distractions such as currents, tropical fish, and entangling seaweed that may break concentration and lead to tactical errors at the deep-sea table.

They’ll be using specially-made weighted chips and waterproof cards. The poker table is also weighted so it doesn’t drift away as the players ponder whether to call or raise.

The tournament will last until only one player wins all the chips, or until the competition either inadvertently floats to the surface or runs out of air and is forced to leave the tournament.

This is Varkonyi's opportunity to improve his stellar record and prove to everyone that he was no fluke.

That was my immediate thought when I saw the news earlier today. I think the boom is still hitting its stride, but the tv industry has skipped a few steps ahead.

The concept is correct, but the cast is wrong. Who the hell wants to see those guys in swimsuits wet underwater.

Clonie gowen vs. isa belle vs. evelyn vs. ness vs. jessica simpson is whom they should put in that event.

So that's where Varkonyi's been since winning the ME.

Please tell me this is a friggin' joke. If this is true, that's it, I'm done with poker. Who the hell wants to watch Varkonyi play anyone, let alone at the bottom of the friggin' ocean? I'm about to lose my lunch all over my monitor.

That was a logical and well thought out reply to such an evil scourge in the poker world.

What, you actually think this is a good idea? Is this really good for the game? What next, poker fear factor? If you get caught bluffing you have to eat beatles dipped in cow dung? I think my response is no less thought out than the creaters of this spectacle. I would have loved to been at that brainstorming meeting. I would love to know the genius that came up with this. "I have an idea, boys, " he says as he puts down his water bong and shoves the hooker off his lap, "let's get together to has-beens in the poker world, throw some scuba gear on them, and have them play heads up in the ocean."

I said on the page before that I can't see why anyone would think this entertaining. But quitting poker because of a dumb idea? Getting really pissed off? That doesn't make much sense, just ignore it.

Oh, I imagine there'll be more. Maybe the Discovery Channel will get in on the poker action and hire the crocodile guy to provide expert commentary.

Still, this isn't as dumb as the "Man versus Vegas" show on CMT. I only saw it once, but I severely doubt that getting a card rush in Blackjack and Baccarat to take away all of the dealer's orange chips is supposed to make him the people's champion against big bad Vegas.

Is it really good for the game? Don't care really. I'm pretty sure its not bad for the game.

I recently stumbled (see, it was an accident, see...um yeah an accident...) on a web site where topless girls wrestle each other. There's a ref and points are taken. Digitial insertion is apparently an acceptable tactic as is stripping your opponent completely naked. (The wrestling was actually much more competent generally, than one would expect). At the end of the match the winner gets to strap on a dildo and screw the loser.

Whatever else you want to say about that, I'm pretty sure its not going to damage the sport of wrestling.

I'd be more than astonished if the underwater poker game had any negative impact on poker generally.

I do wonder if Caro can offer any hints on underwater tells...

Oh and the website for those naked girly wrestling is ultimate surrender dot com or something like that. Not my cup of tea but whatever floats your boat.

Helppi joined poker pros Phil “The Unabomber” Laak and Kenna James, InterPoker.com’s spokesman Peter Marcus, and an amateur online qualifier in the world’s first underwater poker tournament.

Helppi, who along with Kathy Liebert, Robert Varkonyi, and Pete Giordano, make up InterPoker.com’s poker team, didn’t hesitate to say yes when asked if he would play in the undersea event.
