December - the 180 man SNG challenge

As a spur-of-the-moment thing, I've decided to exclusively play the 180-man SNG tournaments on Stars for all of December with a $1600 bankroll.

I will report at the end of the month.

It's kinda ridiculous to say, but truth be told a big majority of my profits have come from MTT scores. I'm a marginal winner in cash games.

So, I'm gonna stick to what works for December and see what happens. The variance shouldn't be too bad. I'll report back at December 15 and New Year's.

Gl Clayton! Let me know how you are doing, I am doing something similar in December with just playing a [censored] ton of SNGs and building the bankroll, hopefully to 3-5K.

Technically my roll is at 3k, but I am shelling out a grand for a laptop and I'm selling my desktop soon for 750ish. However this still depletes things until I sell the desktop. Sooooo yeah, rebuilding. Thanks though.

Anyone have a link to Exitonly's Excel spreadsheet?

Just registered on stars, is this the $20 buy in event? Whats the general standard of play like?

You know, I think I will do the same thing.

Let's play each other HU on 5 tables at once.

My nine year old played in his first one last week and came
in 7th place. The plays pretty bad. Don't develop a case
of fancy play syndrome.

Good luck. I have played about 10 of these things now and I have not made a dollar! Have not cashed, nothing! Pissing me off. I have tried playing tight, loose, agressive, passive, and still can not seem to accumulate any chips. I will be very interested to hear how you do with a larger sample size. I will continue to play them, becuase by god, they will not beat me!! :-)

I started these a week and a half ago, and I love them. 5 cashes, including 2 firsts and 1 second and 2-3 bubbles. Thats out of maybe 25, the play is aweful. I may be just running hot, but who cares... Ride the wave!!

They are pretty fun. Small sample size but I have a 529% ROI after 17 ... I seriously think that if I played an infinite amount my ROI would be around 300%... the play is THAT bad.

GL. You are likely to see me if you play late in the evenings as I've started playing 3 or 4 of these a night about 1 week ago.

Re: December - the 180 man SNG challenge

I'd play more if I had a bigger bankroll, but I have played 2. Made the final table once; entered the final table in 2nd, busted out in 9th to the chip leader. I didn't play any poker for about a week I was so mad at myself. The play is so bad I have considered playing a few more despite the risk, but haven't yet.

Re: December - the 180 man SNG challenge

My very first one I get owned, TP versus top two. The players are really, really terrible. Like raising to 150 preflop in level one and calling a big reraise with KJo terrible.

I feel goot about these things, definitely.

Re: December - the 180 man SNG challenge

Ya, I keep expecting to get crushed by big hands, only to find out the guy called his whole stack off on an ISSD or middle pair. These things are highly +EV!

Can someone give me info about the payout structure of these tournaments? Are they better than the mini-steps on PP?

Wow, I really hate finishing 31st after focusing for 2 hours 15 minutes, pushing for 9BB in the CO with Q2s and getting called in the BB with KQs. Argh.

This is mentally frustrating...

dont worry clay. These guys suck, i have like a 1000000% ROI in these. Variance is a little higher than SnGs though

Just to commiserate, I just spent the first two hours as the chipleader. Then in two orbits, AQ<AK, AK<QQ, and 44<10/10 (BB vs. SB) and i'm out in 26th. I hate poker.

Re: December - the 180 man SNG challenge

I love these things, I'm thinking about quitting my job to just play 180s at Stars (seriously). Just wait for the cards, but if you do get into a pot and miss a flop, extremely aggressive post-flop usually takes it down. Esp. near the end when everyone tightens up to try to make the final 3.

I've only been playing seriously for 3 months. I think I'm above average but nothing special (yet). So you know if I'm beating them handily, the quality of play on these things is pretty piss-poor. Just frustrating in the short run when they donk you out in 23rd place.

Re: December - the 180 man SNG challenge

In order for the 180's to be worth it, I think you have to 3 table them, if not more. The play is so bad that you can easily do this. Last week I spent the better part of 7 hours multitabling them with at least 3 at time, and sometimes at 5 and destroyed them. Final tables are easy on these. It's unreal what people will call down with.

11-29-2005 03:13 PM

Re: December - the 180 man SNG challenge

Also if you're still learning, unlike say the big MTTs where you can go months w/o making a final table, I think the 180s are a great way to get a ton of experience in MTTs for relatively cheap, and still possibly win a nice chunk. At least that's what I tell myself when I bust out on the bubble after 3 hours of toil.

Re: December - the 180 man SNG challenge

Hey Clayton why did you leave yourself rougly 250 (dont remember exactly) after your flop bet with KK? Terrible call on the flop by him, but there was no way he was going to fold to the turn bet. Do you think you should have just pushed the flop?

Also...heres a hand from a 180 I played last night.

Blinds--200-400. Stacks--Hero 6100 Villain 6365. 43 players left.

Villian raises to 1200 UTG+1. Not too much of a read on villian. Hero in MP+2 with 99?

Do you stick er in there or fold?

Re: December - the 180 man SNG challenge

Apporx how long do these take on average to complete? I have been dabbling a little more in MTTs recently and think these are a good way to gain experience as another poster menioned.

11-29-2005 03:22 PM

Re: December - the 180 man SNG challenge

Well, takes around 2 hours to get near the bubble. I would plan for 3 to 3 and a half.
