Flopped trips...but what? River raise.

I know this hand is boring for some of you, so sorry if it is... I have trouble with these...

Villian here is 15.1/6.6/0.8 after 144 hands.

Hero is SB with QTs

Villian calls, CO calls, Hero completes, BB checks.

FLIZOP (4SB) - 4 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], Q [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], Q [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]

Hero bets, Villian calls.

TURN (3BB) - J [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]

Hero bets, Villian calls

RIVER (5BB) - 2 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]

Hero Bets, Villian raises...

I'm not folding, but should I? I KNOW I'm beat. WTF is Villian (w/.8ag) raising with that I beat? Nothing.

Re: Flopped trips...but what? River raise.

I recommend a call. Yes it is a smal pot and yes he is passive postflop but I think that we could still be best here and it is worth the call.

Re: Flopped trips...but what? River raise.

Do not fold to the river bet. I doubt you are beat, although from the tone of this post it certainly sounds like you lost. I've seen enough players who are trying to slowplay their flopped trips by check calling to the river and then raising. Also, if you are beat make a note of what the villain's cards were so you can make a correct fold, or raise if this situation comes up again.

I know I have to call, but is such a passive player raising without a Q? Is he limping UTG with a weaker Q?

Re: Flopped trips...but what? River raise.

He has a queen with worse kicker often enough where you have to call.

he could have Qx, but how many Qx does a 15.1 vpip play that you beat here? Q9s, that's about it, or a chop. still, getting 8:1 I call

you think Hero is good >50% of the time here? no way. have you seen villain's stats?

Probably not. But then again, in terms of kicker assuming they don't have a boat you're behind AQ and KQ, and both these hands I'd assume they'd raise pre flop. In this hand I'd still make the call (without reads), even though the pot is relatively small. Make a note of what the villain had and use it against them when another hand comes into play like this.

Re: Flopped trips...but what? River raise.

Well, I fold more rivers than most people here but not this one. He could easily play a weak Q like this.

Re: Flopped trips...but what? River raise.

You only have to be good here 1 in 8 times to call.

6.6 PFR - AQ is well within his raising range.
QJ goes to war on the turn. (or should)
QT you split with.

Leaving only KQ to be afraid of.

Re: Flopped trips...but what? River raise.

This is a interesting hand to say the least. I think that you are good here, and I fully expect to see him flip over Qx, and you drag the pot!

Re: Flopped trips...but what? River raise.

I don't think we can 3-bet since Villain's likely limping range doesn't include (m)any worse Qs. The combined possibilities of Villain doing something wacky pf or being on a worse hand should easily justify a call though. Maybe he's slowplaying an overpair. Maybe he thinks Js up are good. Who knows? I call.

Re: Flopped trips...but what? River raise.

i dunno if the way this was posted has biased the responses here but i sure as anything dont fold.... the idea you arent ahead here 1 in 8 times is insanity

the choice between 3betting and calling is trickier though.

first up i dont think he puts you on a Q. second i think he raises AQ or JJ preflop, due to the fact that around 7/15 of the hands he opens with he opens with a raise.

i doubt he will stay quiet on the turn with QJ or a lower set, despite his low aggression

so are we really that scared of KQ here? there are 4 combos...

if there was a way we could raise and put one more bet in without needing to 3bet/call (thus avoiding the 2:1 mistake) i would 3bet this no question, but as he is capping with almost any hand that beats you i just call the raise and expect to win.

yes call. yes most likely win.

22? If so good luck to him.

Call & find out! (then make notes for next time). I think you win more than you lose here.

Re: Flopped trips...but what? River raise.

:grunch: It would look like the villan had pocket 2's, but the calling station-like play doesn't match his stats.

I'd call his raise on the river at the very least to figure out what he had.

11-28-2005 02:20 PM

Re: Flopped trips...but what? River raise.

grunchin it

Villain with those pf numbers seems to be limping a mid-low pocket pair or weak offsuit broadways. If he has a Q, you're probably losing since he would only limp QT+. He could have something like JT also and decide that his hand is best on the river. I also wouldn't be too surprised if he called down with 22 thinking his pair is good, but that seems unlikely if hes playing tight.

I think you played it fine. If you KNOW you're beat, you should fold. It would take a pretty strong read for me to fold this however.

Re: Flopped trips...but what? River raise.

What limit is this? I will assume 1/2 full at party

villan with these stats will limp (from CO -1) with
(all unsuited)
AK (sometimes),
AQ / AJ / AT
KQ / KJ / KT
QJ / QT
JT
and raise with suited versions and good PPs

Re: passiveness
- He may call down with overs in case he hits especially if he has a J.
- He may raise on the river if he believes you are calling with overs and he has a J
- If he has AA, KK or a Q he is doing this to "maximize" the bets because he fears you will fold if he raises the turn.

It's worth a call - even if you know he plays exactly as I've outlined you have to call (but in the future check the river to this guy so you only have to put up 1 bet)

Re: Flopped trips...but what? River raise.

what do you think the villian has you on?

a flush draw K high? that would expland his raise at the river...because you came in from the sb, and only called, you could have a wide range of hands, and he may have Q9/8 suited, as the game is shorthanded and that hand is playable under those conditions...still, his stats make that hand look unlikely...call it to the river

Coolidge 11-28-2005 03:34 PM

RESULTS for those who care.

Well, obviously I make the call. Luckily, Villian is even worse than me. He missed a bet on the turn. His Q [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]J [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] was goot!

11-28-2005 03:42 PM

Re: RESULTS for those who care.

did he miss a bet...or did he think he was so strong he could let you improve you hand on the turn so that you would bet more on the river? if he had raised on the turn, might you have folded?

i am surprised that with QJsuited in a fourway game he limped...

Re: Flopped trips...but what? River raise.

I don't know if I could ever consider folding trips headsup on the river for one bet. I realize the pot is small and villian is extremely passive, but I'm still calling.

Coolidge 11-28-2005 03:59 PM

Re: RESULTS for those who care.

Sorry, I never specified.

It was 9 handed 1/2

I'm calling a turn raise and calling the river.

But, yeah...maybe I'm the dum dum here.

folding here is horrible. raising here is worse. call and cuss.
