A few $10 wines

Picked up a few bottles of wine from Safeway to drink w/ friends/family over the holiday weekend. There have recently been a few threads asking about reasonably priced wines. Here are a few that were all $8-12 (most of these were on sale, a couple bucks cheaper than normal). Safeway also gives you an extra 10% off when you buy 6 or more bottles.

White:
hess select 2004 chardonnay
clos du bois 2004 reserve chardonnay
(Have had both of these before, both quite tasty)

Red
hess select 2002 syrah
clos du bois 2002 shiraz
(Haven't tried either of these yet)

Champagne/Sparkling Wine
gloria ferrer brut
piper sonoma brut
(Both of these are very good, incredible values)

Please post a trip report after you drink the Clos du Bois shiraz. After having their 2001 reserve cabernet, I'm anxious to hear if this one can compare. Especially for such a cheap price.

I can vouch that this is an extremely good wine for the price.

For $6 a bottle Barefoot red zinfindel is pretty damn good.

You should go to Kermit Lynch in Berkeley for wine bargains.

No, no, no. Kermit Lynch is on San Pablo, not Shattuck.

so, presumably, you regularly drink very good wine.

but, when you go see your beloved family you stop off at the local gas station on the way and buy the "real good" [censored].

People who aren't big wine drinkers will probably enjoy this wine more than most of the more expensive wine in my house.

If you are looking for decent sub-$10 wines and you have a Trader Joes around, try the Charles Shaw aka "Two Buck Chuck". Only sold at Trader Joe's, the price is now $2.99. The Shiraz and Cab's are decent for the price. Merlot is crap.

I usually buy them by the case, so I always have some around. My wife doesn't drink red wine, so I will crack open a bottle sometimes when I just feel like a glass or two, then I don't feel guilty if the rest goes to waste.

I bought 10 bottles like 8 days ago and it was only $2, not $2.99, is this an incredibly recent change or are you wrong?

$2 in California, $2.99 on the east coast, and I'm not sure about the rest.

$2.99 in Seattle area. T.J. founded in California, so apparently they still give you the good price - bastages!

I was not aware that you were referring to an actual "bay bridge" and assumed there was only 1 important bridge in the san francisco area.

I know that there are a bunch of really good NZ whites that are affordable along with being really tasty. Just something to consider for everyone. They do Sauvignon Blanc real well

As far as I know it's three bucks everywhere but the bay area.

Hess makes good wine throughout their range; some of the Hess Collection wines are outstanding. I also like the Gloria Ferrer though am not a big fan of the Piper Sonoma. The Rancho Zabaco Zins (made by Gallo, but so what?) are good and Columbia Crest tends to be reliable as well.

Safeway, though? Even though it's nearby, their selection has been shrinking, at least at my local stores, nor are their prices very good. In SF, how about The Wine Club and/or BevMo?

Which type did you have? I love the cab, and tried the cab-merlot mix on friday and it was delicious. I brought it to the get-together I went to and it was all gone by the time I went back for my second glass .

Yellowtail Shiraz. I'm a redneck, YMMV.

I'm a couple of blocks from The Wine Club (great!) and K&L (excellent!). I buy from both of those places, and the staff there can recommend something great in any style and price range. I grocery shop at Safeway, though, and they have a pretty good selection of good reasonably priced wines.

Re: A few $10 wines

agree w/ most of this. I like hess wines pretty well and agree w/ you and ElD on the others, except columbia crest. I had a dirt cheap cab from them recently that was good cheap wine, but had a nasty merlot. I am becoming leery of washington reds the more I try. Some I like of course tho.

In the 10 range I have found a bunch of wines I like, usually california blends. Marietta, the menage a trois from folie a deux, the rosenblum vintner mix zin, stuff like that. Or some of the australians. The cheap washington ones are getting pushed down the list.

Was quite nice. A little dryer and less fruity than I expected, but I enjoyed it quite a bit.

I also cracked open a bottle of 1990 Dom Perignon last night (see, Victor, I give the family the good stuff too!). That was really good.

Sorry to bump but I thought I would comment.

Bought 5 bottles of Piper and 1 of Clos du Bois (red) for my birthday. The red was for dinner and the champange was for the pre-pary. Both are awesome dude. Thanks for the suggestions. The are certainly worth the $70 for the six case. Cheers!
