LHE game and it's down to the river. Board is AAK48. You have AK. Action previous to the river has made it clear villain has a big hand, but he's somewhat of a retard. You both have over 100 bets in front of you. How many bets do you go?

Good point (about the time factor)... maybe that puts the rest of the table on tilt... potentially a good thing based on other posts in these forums.

I guess it depends a bit on what type of player. I've seen players go for quite a while with second and third nuts (quite likely based on the retard read).

I would definitely go to the felt with this hand. Full Houses are usually the hardest to read as the nuts, and if this guy is somewhat retarded I wouldn't be surprised to see him turn over KK after heavy betting. If it was something like KQJTx, I would give him more credit for having the A and probably stop after 3-4 bets (2 if the player was competent).

I'd say 4-5 bets, if he's a retard, why ruin his night? Punish him with a few bets if he's not having the nuts. Then stick to poker. If you like stealin candy from a baby, why not doin that instead?

I've gone 12 bets before preflop with AA in a full ring 20/40 game and I won the hand (without making a flush). It's not quite 100, but it illustrates the point. Don't ever stop with the nuts, unless freerolling is a possibility.

While your attitude is certainly admirable, I don't think the two situations are analogous. To be the best poker player you can be, you have to be ruthless (while still playing within all rules of the game). It's nothing personal; it's just poker. I think a better analogy is like if the Texas longhorns were to lose their game this weekend, and PSU were playing some scrub and Joe Paterno saw Texas lost on the scoreboard and then told his troops to run up the score as much as possible (to try to gain points to eclipse Texas in the BCS standings). I really don't think there'd be anything wrong with it, since as long as both teams enter a competition in agreement to play their hardest against eachother, mercy is never, ever a requirement.

If I'm playing in a game with a friend (which I often am), and notice the friend isn't playing A-poker in that session or is tilting or whatever, I will tell them I don't think they're playing well. But if they stay in the game, I sure as hell am not going to go easy on them out of guilt that they're playing when they shouldn't be. Why should I? And why should Kurosh go easy on the semi-retard opponent who has willingly entered this game of wit, skill and luck?

I can't think of a single reason to not keep going unless I'm really not wanting to spend a bunch of time chopping a pot afterwards....but the Dealers will usually keep the chips seperate to see that doesn't happen.

about bet 10 I'd stop and take a REAL close look at everything though - I usually memorize my hole cards and never go back to them during a hand but eventually I'd have to recheck them before I kept betting...... [img]/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]

and I've seen it go the other way...go 6 or 7 bets and the other player looks down and sees what he thought was a heart is really a diamond and just give up...until they do, get the money.

Why ever stop?

Dealers will generally have you leave your bets in front of you so they are easier to pull back if its a chop. In this case it may not even be a chop, so just keep going.

As to the guy who says not to bleed the other player dry, he is mistaken. Poker is a predatory game, and anyone who plays it otherwise is at a grave disadvantage.

I once stopped at about 6 bets. I expected to see a chop. I didn't even see the 3rd or 4th nut. Just some goofball, and I wanted to get to the next hand. I'll never stop again. Once in a while, you'll get a whole bunch of money from some drunk dude who justs wants to bet. These freeroll situations can only pay off, so take them.

one time i was at bay 101 with AA on an As4h7c9hQd board, after we went 8 bets on the river, the other guy said that he was going to keep going to the felt so the dealer just let us each put our stack in the middle. this saved time and gave me all the other guys chips much quicker.

A virtually identical hand happened at the Hustler 6/12 a couple weeks ago. The board was AAK95 or something, and two guys went 9 bets on the river. During all this action, the floor was called over, and a couple people thought it would be a jackpot until they were told a jackpot holding was impossible (it is).

After the hand (which of course was chopped by two AKs), half the table criticized them for going so far when it was obvious they were chopping. I defended them, saying when you have the nuts it never makes sense to just call. Guy A said he played with Guy B before and knew him to be reasonable, so that's why he ultimately just called the 9th bet. Guy B said he had an unbeatable hand and said 'you never know.' I like Guy B.

Canterbury Park 6/12, about 3:00 am today. Board reads KJQ4T, with no flush. Three players get to the 5-bet cap, and the way they played, two of them were going to the felt if possible, but were saved by the cap.

Hands: KJo, QQ and ATo.

Once I stopped after 10-15 bets or so when I had JK on a board that was 9TQxx.

Of course, my opponent had 8J.

That's the last time I made that mistake.

Once I went a lot of bets with the second nuts in an online hand and posted about it, and everyone thought I should have went more bets/to the felt. Going to the felt live is a no brainer.

Poker is about stealing candy from babies. It is about predation. Predators in the wild are not nice. They do not attack the strongest, they attack the weakest. They attack the juveniles, the pregnant, the sick. They do not take on equal opponents. They overwhelm weaker opponents with unfair advantages, such as size or numbers. Poker players do the same, taking advantage of, for example, the ignorant player or the drunk player, at least good ones do (these comments are in part taken from Al Schoonmaker's excellent column about poker and predation, which I do not have handy).

I say 8 bets because by then some schmuck at the table will notify your opponent that you have the nutz. Thats when his face will turn white, he will start to feel sick, and he will toss in that last bet for you just in case he might still win.

I know this from experiance... happened on Thanksgiving sometime after midnight at the Borg. All I could do was think of this thread and chuckle. Poor schmuck couldn't slow play his aces fast enough until the river when the board was AQxQQ (I held AQ). I'm not positive, but I think he started to cry.
