Big wads of cash
I'm leaving tomorrow morning for the caribbean poker champs in St. Kitts. I plan to play in a bunch of smaller tourneys and cash games leading up to the main event. I am bringing $6,000 in cash. The dumb lady at the bank gave me about half of that in $50's so the wad is even thicker than it should be.
My question is this: What is the easiest way to carry the cash? ie. in pocket, laptop bag, checked-in bag, etc. My concerns are safety and convenience. |
Re: Big wads of cash
Wrap it in a rubber hand or a hair scruncy and put it in your pocket when you go through security. I definitly wouldn't put it in either a carry on or checked bag.

Re: Big wads of cash
Pocket(s), no paper clips and you'll be fine.

Have you ever carried cash before? How do you usually carry it? ie. in pocket, What a crazy idea. laptop bag, Yeah, because those all open at the security gate, so everyone will know how cool you are carrying a lot of money. Plus, if the on board baggage is full, and they want to store your bag below, you can announce in a loud voice "Be careful, this bag has a lot of money in it". If you throw it in the overbin, no one would ever take your bag by mistake. It would be much harder for someone to steal a bag you are carrying, then get something out of your pocket. checked-in bag, etc. Yes, because then it will be out of your sight, and besides, the airlines NEVER lose luggage. |
Re: Big wads of cash
Get some American Express Traveler's Checks. I took them to Antigua & St. Lucia on my honeymoon. They are as good as cash without the enormous wad. Also, if they get lost/stolen, you can get reimbursed.

Re: Big wads of cash
I've carried enormous wads of cash in this:
http://www.orvis.com/store/product_choic...46&shop_id= It has very little metal in it, so I've never had to take it off to get through security. |
Re: Big wads of cash
I recommend a large burlap sack with a dollar sign printed on the front.

Re: Big wads of cash
You should seriously look into traveller's checks. As has been already stated in this thread, they are just as good as cash, and if they are stolen you can cancel them. Do you really want to deal with the stress of carrying that much cash around?

Re: Big wads of cash
Go back to the bank and get hundreds. Then put it in your pocket.
|
Re: Big wads of cash
take all the 50s back to the bank and demand pennies. no way is anyone going to steal that many pennies from you. they won't make it far even if they try. you sacrifice a tiny bit of convenience, but your security goes through the roof.

Re: Big wads of cash
Money in your pocket, gun around your waist!

Re: Big wads of cash
Get a strap you silly guy. Wear it around your stomach, or your chest. Or perhaps your leg. Nobody will ever see it. Then if you get jacked you can give them your wallet and run away with your 6k safely tucked under your belly.

Re: Big wads of cash
One time I got a fanny pack and put it under my shirt/jacket against my stomach. Worked for me.
If you carry that much cash on a plane though, do you have to claim it or something? I'm not sure what the rate is, it might be like 10k though |

You have to declare it there is a form for it, andthe threshold is 10k. Also you have to fill out the form both ways, leaving and entering the US. Cash includes travelers checks. So the OP is fine with his 6k. But if you carry 10k you need to fill out Customs Form 4790. It probably has different number now, though, with the migration of Customs to the Department of Homeland Security. Failure to fill out the form may result in losing all that money (or travelers checks.) I don't see any reason why you would be hassled about it at customs though. --Zetack |

Who carries 6k in cash these days? 1. Gamblers. 2. Drug Dealers. 3. Terrorists (who can't get a bank account, so they have to do everything in cash). 4. Illegal immigrants (same thing about the bank account). |
Re: Big wads of cash

If they are still suspicious he should just show them his tourney entry forms, etc. Actually, if he wins big he should wire xfer the money back home to avoid all the possible fuss at the airports. If he's really looking to get back in with more cash under the radar there's always the chocolate railroad route. (sorry, I couldn't resist). |

Re: Big wads of cash
I have carried $15,000 through US customs and filled out the forms required. They didn't bother me for a second. Just "you've checked this box. fill out this form. (brief glance) Thank you, go."
