How much have YOU paid in rake so far in 2005??

By my calc's, I have paid online poker rooms $55,000 for the 'privilege' of using their services in 2005. That's more than my salary from my previous job (before I quit to enroll in grad school / play poker).

Another way to look at it: back when I used to multi-table the 2/4 and 3/6 games, I remember my PT said that I used to pay an amount in rake that was nearly equivalent to my total winnings. Imagine new casino opened up that advertised rake-free games, with the caveat that you had to fork over to the casino half of whatever you won. You'd prob tell them to go F themselves. And yet we happily make the same bargain with the poker sites.

Thank god the rake isn't nearly as big a % of my winnings at 20/40 and up.

I've paid $33,403 in rake since June 1st and I play a lot less hands than most poker pros I know (played 78,000 hands in this amt of time).

On Party I've paid $31,339. I don't import hamds from Stars or UB, but half my play is there........... not so terrible, but it would be nice if I had gotten rakeback on 30% of the whole amount, I could use an extra $10K right now.

40k in total since I started playing about 15 months ago

Yeah the rake at the low limits is a real killer. Its a shame -- If the rake was substantially lower or rake free, some phenomenol winrates would be achaivable -- you could make a decent salary on a tiny weeny bankroll.

It's pretty amazing anyone can make money playing less than 20/40 with the amount of money people pay in rake.

yup.

Of the first $100 an hour I make, $65 goes to rake, then the government wants $10, so I get $25. I guess I'm working on commission.

I get 35% back and my friend gets another 25% of my rake for referring my other friend who gets 1% of my rake as well, so the site is only getting 39% of my rake, so it aint all bad for me

Re: How much have YOU paid in rake so far in 2005??

Would the rake $, as a % of your winnings be a better gauge?

In a business I owned the materials cost was about 25%. Some jobs higher, some lower, but overall it averaged about 25%.

Payroll, and associated expenses, also at about 25%. And so on for every other cost item. We were looking to maintain about 10% pre-tax net. In this particular industry, annual surveys kept everyone informed about how comparable size companies were doing and we could compare every cost item.

What I'm getting at is, consider the "privilege," as you call it, a cost of doing business - your overhead. If your gross is 100k, yeah, 55k is a large part. But, what other expenses do you have that get charged against the gross? I don't have any idea how serious players keep their records, but it might be interesting to compare the % rather than the $.

$ 180,000 ? ? ?

If I may ask . . .

How much are you up for the year ?

Perhaps a better question would be what are/were your expectations or projections for the year ?

*

How much have you received in rake rebates ?

*

What limits do you typically play ?

*

Although I am very curious as to your responses - especially since the rake should not be costing more than half of your gross winnings - one thing doesn't change.

The sites are living high off the hog while we scrounge for crumbs.

But what is the alternative ?

I have neither the desire, the capital nor the know-how to start my own site.

Oh, and by the way, those crumbs are more than I, and probably many others, have ever or will ever earn - at least on an hourly basis.

I posess no talents other than poker that allow me to sit in my den, watch TV, talk on the phone and earn what I earn playing online.

Hell, I don't have very many talents that allow me to earn what I earn doing anything else anywhere.

I have a job that I love that pays me far less than I want/need/deserve; well, maybe not less than I need but definitely less than I want.

Poker fills the void and I enjoy it.

*

I remember back to when it cost 6% of the amount of the deposit to fund your acct. using a CC and not all the sites allowed you to "work off" this fee.

Sign-up or re-up bonuses ? HA ! Surely you jest.

Over time conditions improved.

Party and the handful of other major players will not have it as good as they now do forever.

The rake will drop; certainly not tomorrow, likely not this year and maybe not next but it will come down.

I took only the core requirements in Economics but I learned enough to know that in business as in chemistry "nature abhors a vacuum".

Given time the 5%, max. $3 rake will be something only the old folks remember.

*

A HUNDRED AND EIGHTY THOUSAND IN RAKE ? ? ?

I have a few dollars sitting around; if you're looking for investors to help defray the cost of starting a site I might be interested.

All I'd want in return would be the privelege of playing there rake-free forever.

Best wishes,

- Chris

Re: $ 180,000 ? ? ?

I play for a living.

Currently I am 8 tabling the 5-10 6 max or some combination of the 5-10 and 3-6 6 max games. Previously I was 12 tabling the 2-4 and 3-6 full games.

As for what I have won for the year, that doesnt really matter. Yes, I am on a rakeback plan
