Longest World Series of Poker Final Table

The tournament began at 4PM in the afternoon and ended at around 6:45 AM. Don't you think it would have been great if ESPN had displayed the hour and time that most of the big hands were being played? [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]

it would have been nice to at least MENTION it. i couldn't believe they never said that. it really affected the way the play went.

Couldn't agree more. And it's not like ESPN doesn't do that with other sports. For instance, on SportsCenter on the last Sunday of the NFL season, when three teams are vying for one final playoff spot, they'll flip back and forth between the highlights showing the exact time that each play happened.

Yes, this would've been a great idea.

Overall, I felt ESPN did a decent job with the WSOP coverage, but they definitely dropped the ball when it came to giving viewers perspective on just how long that final table went.

I was there the whole time, but I couldn't stand being in that room the whole bazillion hours. I was delirious by the time it ended and I didn't even play.

poker tv never really has had much to do with the game itself.

They did this with some of the past WSOP airings. It ended with the 2002 showing. I thought it was a great feature to show that some time did lapse while playing. There are people out there that actually think all hands are shown, not just the highlights.

Yeh, showing the time would add to the drama. However, they don't want to emphasize that they condensed 14 hours into 2 hours by leaving out all the hands wherea single preflop raise took the blinds and antes. Some people don't realize it's like watching the "Baseball Tonight" version of the World Series of Baseball.

A little off topic, but don't you think that after a long week of hard play(80+ hours) that ESPN & Harrah's could keep the final table going at a faster pace? 231 hands in 13.5 hours is ~17 hands an hour. Talk about a grind.

good point. you would think they could knock out at least 25-30 hands per hour.

25-30 hands per hour is pretty standard at a casino playing 5-10. When you are making decisions for all your chips (and you have millions in front of you) with 7.5 million for first, you are going to take a while to make decisions. 17 hands per hour is probably all you can expect.

I do however think that there should have been more coverage of the final table, due to its length we should have had 4 hours of final table coverage. There are a lot of hands (obviously) missing that would be interesting, big laydowns rather than just the all in hands.

They are taking breaks too. 1 hour dinner break, 15 minute breaks every 2 hours or so?

Plus I forgot about the "breaks" whenever someone busted out. Still, a very long day for ~230 hands.

ESPN made it look like there were only 2 or 3 hands when it went to HU. Does anyone know the approximate hand count or time it took from HU to final?

Re: Longest World Series of Poker Final Table

IIRC it was less than 10.

I think ESPN made a HUGE mistake in not showing how long it took. Really took one of the more compelling elements of the story away from what happened.

The impression I get with their coverage is that they like to (to borrow a wrestling term) "kayefabe" it, and not acknowledge that they're not doing this live. Not discussing the passage of time seems to be part of that, but I don't think it works.

HU was only 6 hands, so we got to see 1/3 of it.

A little commentary would have been great.

"We are now at Hand #43 and it's 2 A.M., not a lot of action since our last hand except for blind stealing and the chip counts are as follows(post a graphic)"

"This is a grueling final table, it's now 4 A.M. and we are at hand # . . ." etc

What we needed was Kiefer Sutherland doing commentary along with a clock in the corner.
