I\'m killing this place
I got introduced to a local "underground" pokerroom social club back in June, and since then I've played 2-3 times a week there. 2 to 4 tables running most nights, 3/6/12 and 5/10Kill games are offered. Probably 300 members play there part time but a dozen are almost always there. Lots of these players are longtimers who've know each other for 20 or more years. Its a very well run room with great management, lots of friendly people, excellent food, security.... and my goodness the games are juicy sweet.
A few decent players, most are classic schooling fish. But until I started showing up they never had a 2+2er with 300000+ online 6-max hands under his belt using pokertracker and ACE HUD plus 50 read poker books in his library.. I've yet to play with anyone else in the "big" 5/10 kill game who comes close to my expertiese. After 300 hours at this place its pretty obvious to everybody there that I'm -real- good. I've had some losing sessions of course, and I'm always very polite and friendly and cheerful and never complain and am generally a nice guy both at and away from a poker table.. but my super tight aggressive style and pushing small edges hard has definitely been noticed. Unfortunately I don't know other places around town to play live (closest casino 3 hours away) and I'm concerned that long term it could get ugly with how much I could take from this community. Not that I'm complaining, so far everybody has been mostly friendly, management likes me and I've recruited other players.. but in the game am getting lots of "here comes lucky" and the table conversations at times have been how much I've won recently.. which I don't like hearing. Anyway not sure how to best handle the situation. Hoping other 2+2ers don't find out about it tho L8r... BB |
Re: I\'m killing this place
Don't worry about it. They dont' see that you are good. They see that you are lucky. You are making a common mistake that because you see skill in the game that others must. They will tell you "we all know how to play, it is just a matter of getting the cards."

Re: I\'m killing this place
if the fish think like you seem to think they think, I think they wouldn't be fish anymore.

Re: I\'m killing this place
Just make sure to show off a gambooling attitude once in a while and make sure your losses get noticed more than your wins. Coloring up to avoid sitting with huge stacks might also downplay the fact that you're killing the game.

</MASSIVE EGO STROKING> [/ QUOTE ] It ain't bragging if its true. Fact is 2 years ago I learned that a flush beat a straight and since then I've worked on my game with a compulsion second to none. I honestly wondered how my skills would stack up when I started playing at this B&M cardroom, and was pleasantly surprised to learn that I practically own the joint. Long timers who thought they were good players have suddently learned otherwise. Its kinda shaken things up. I've basically been banned from the 3/6/12 game there when a big burly guy "joked" that I was winning too much (I took the hint). Anyway I don't wana cook the golden egg laying geese over there too fast. Its a nice problem to have but I feel like I gota tread carefully. Thanks for suggestions everyone! L8r... BB |

It ain't bragging if its true. [/ QUOTE ] Of course it is. If it's true, it's bragging. If it's false, it's lying. That may be your problem at the tables, too. At the tables, the last thing you want is for the fish to think you have the slightest clue about how to play poker. They can think you're a lucky SOB all day long and you're fine, just don't let them ever think you have skill. Like steam said. Advertise a bit. |
Re: I\'m killing this place
Since you are so good, a 3 hour drive to the nearest casino shouldn't be a problem, because the players in a casino would be even worse than regulars at a card club.
That way you spread your play around, and the casino probably has a wider choice of limits. |

Re: I\'m killing this place
I AM SO GOOD THAT EVERYONE SCREAMS FISH WHEN I SIT AT THE TABLE. WHAT DO THEY MEAN?

Re: I\'m killing this place
Sounds like youre running good. Congratulations. All good runs come to an end sooner or later when the deck starts handing out the inevitable run of beats. Generally it's sooner when you start getting cocky and underestimating your opponents.

Re: I\'m killing this place
I hear that. Right now I am only down 3000BB. If I hit a down swing I will have to get a second job.

But until I started showing up they never had a 2+2er with 300000+ online 6-max hands under his belt using pokertracker and ACE HUD plus 50 read poker books in his library.. [/ QUOTE ] I assume that you made them all aware of this fact, right? [ QUOTE ] After 300 hours at this place its pretty obvious to everybody there that I'm -real- good. [/ QUOTE ] Bad players usually think that a) skill doesn't mean much in poker and it's all luck anyway, or b) a "really good" player is someone who can tell exactly what you are holding by looking how your irises contract and your neck vein pulses. Most of them won't understand what it is that you are doing right, unless you tell them. [ QUOTE ] but my super tight aggressive style and pushing small edges hard has definitely been noticed. [/ QUOTE ] Bad players don't even understand what a small edge is. Somewhat better players understand the concept, but they'll never be able to spot one. Only other good players are going to be able to tell when you push a thin edge - everyone else will just think that you got lucky. [ QUOTE ] but in the game am getting lots of "here comes lucky" and the table conversations at times have been how much I've won recently.. which I don't like hearing. [/ QUOTE ] Now this I buy. They probably do think you're lucky, and they think that your luck will turn around eventually. Encourage this belief, acknowledge (to them) that you are a lucky skunk and buy the table a round of drinks every once in a while and noone will mind having you there. I'm sure you are a good player, and that you are crushing these games, but if 1/10 of the ego that you are showing here seeps out when you are playing, then you are making a big mistake. |

Were you ever all county? How many solo tackles did you have?

[/ QUOTE ] That's pretty much how I feel too. Your post seemed unnecessarily long, and you made it a point to tell us in detail how good a player you are. So it seems you have a pretty healthy ego, and I wonder if this is apparent to your opponents. |
Re: I\'m killing this place
They think you are lucky, so you need to let them know you agree.
When you show down JT tell them how it's better than AK because you heard on TV it makes more straghts. Say stupid [censored] like you always 77 to the river because your favorite slot machine in Vegas is the flaming 777 one. |

[/ QUOTE ] did you even read the OP? he claims to have logged 300+ hours playing 2-3 times a week for 5 months against the same guys, who by the way, have been playing for 20 years??? and you want him to try your grade school - penny ante mind games? save this crap for your Jr high reunion poker games. he may be a better player than those he described but your suggested tactic is fooling no one at this game. you may just insult the "burly" guy enough to put an end to your visits |

If you are this good, take your roll and move to Vegas. Find some fishy 30/60 action, and you will be driving Benzos within six months.

Re: not so fast slick
