Milwaukee\'s Best Light commercials during WSOP

Apologies if these ads have been discussed here before (I did a search and nothing came up, but I rarely visit this forum).

I have a logistics problem with this spot, and it does not involve the fact that Chris Ferguson is living in a refrigerator.

What happens is, every time the Hero goes to get Chris's advice, he makes up some excuse why he needs to leave the room. But then he goes to the fridge and gets a new can of Milwaukee's Best Light beer, and sits back down. If he's going to get a beer, why doesn't he just tell the other guys that he's going to get a beer? Why does he need all those wacky excuses? They see him returning from the fridge with a beer. It's certainly understandable that he's going to get another can (after all, this IS a commercial for beer), so he still doesn't have to reveal that he's getting inside info from Jesus while he's there.

It's very perplexing.

I assumed that there was a bet going amongst the buddies that any time any of them went for a beer they had to come up with a reason they were getting up besides getting said tasty beverage.

How does Chris know whether to HE or FE when he's inside a refrigerator and didn't see the hand? Of course, we didn't really see the hand either. Fascinating. Deep.

All that time with all that beer in that little fridge and yet Chris never felt compelled to drink any of it. Sure makes me want to run out and buy a case.

The event is pre-taped, he very easily could've interviewed every player about every hand to know in advance the correct play.

There is no toilet in the fridge, why would he drink extra in order to need to use a bathroom?

He's gonna have to go sometime anyway, might as well empty a can ahead of time.

How does he charge his cell phone battery?

You guys are all conveniently side-stepping the question. Ad writers will often come up with an absurd situation and force an audience to suspend their disbelief. In this case, it's the fact that Chris Ferguson is living in a refrigerator, dispensing poker brilliance.

That's not the issue.

Once the audience buys into that "world," the rest of the copy has to fit within the logic of that world. i.e., all the humans are the right size, nobody can fly, men sit around drinking beer and watching poker, etc. And for the other jokes to work, everything else has to fit within our frame of logic. The fact that this guy needs excuses to go get a beer is not explained *within the world of the ad*.

I can only assume you continue to avoid my question by pointlessly fixating on Ferguson in the fridge because you, like me, have no answer.

Not everything needs be explained. In a film taking place over the course of a month, do you see the character go to the bathroom 100+ times? (I know this is a poor analogy, but I think you're asking a bit much to have Chris Ferguson's Magical Fridge Fantasy Land World explained to the Nth degree -- sometimes, you need to fill in the blanks, as I have with the wager I described earlier.)

It is not enough to WANT the beer. You have to EARN it.

I don't want everything to be explained. You're still completely missing my point. Take, for example, the Levi's ad where that white guy steals the black guy's jeans off the balcony. For the rest of the night, whatever the black guy does (put socks on, dance for his girlfriend, jump around the room), happens to the white guy because the jeans are possessed by his soul.

Nobody questions the physical impossibility of the white guy's muscles being controlled by the black guy. That's the premise of the ad, and it's accepted. But everything else that happens in the ad is totally understandable by society's standards, and *that is what makes it funny*. See, when the black guy dances in his underwear, griding with his girlfriend, the white guy is in a subway station and finds himself griding with a businessman, and having to apologize for it. This is funny because the guy isn't gay and wouldn't, in his normal life, grind his ass against a stranger. So he has to apologize because his jeans are possessed.

It's not like the writers also decided to have the businessman in the subway start shooting laser beams out of his eyes. That wouldn't make any sense. For the Ferguson-in-the-fridge concept to be funny, which it could be, the audience needs to identify with the world around it. That's the entire point of writing, especially comedy writing. And in real life, nobody comes up with ludicrous excuses to go get a beer out of the fridge.

I think it's was fairly obvious. The guy is tricking his friends. He feels guilty about this so he makes up ridiculous excuses almost as if he subconsciously wants to be caught.

This is true, but at least we finally have the first reasonable explanation. This thread may actually get somewhere once the donks are finished patting themselves on the back for recognizing that it's illogical to have Chris Ferguson living in a refrigerator.

She says that his buddies might say "oh yeah, I need a beer too, I'll go get it". She doesn't want me typing what she says anymore. She says she needs time to think about it and people are gonna say "only girls would go with each other to get beer".

True. But the best beer commercials on Tuesday nights are the "Men Should Act Like Men" ones. I believe they are Milwaukee's best also.

its because everyone knows furgesson lives in the fridge and if he said he was going to the fridge after the question was asked then it would be obvious who he got the answer from.

this is wrong but better than what anyone has said so far :P

Ironically I was just going to say "only girl's would go with each other to get a beer."

I got it, the guys just got FPS. He can't just make the straight forward play and say he's getting a beer.

Agreed. So why would he come back with a beer in his hand? That ruins his ruse. I would think he would just return empty handed, then go get a beer when there isn't a hand in play so as to throw off any suspicions.

What I find odd is that the fridge is at most 15 feet from the table where they are playing. It seems like the other people at the table could hear their friend talking to the fridge, if not the reply from C.F.................

The first thing incorrect about these ads is the fact that this beer is partially described by the word "best".

Im just wondering why none of the other guys go grab a beer, I mean.... do they have another fridge? Or are they smart enough not to drink milwaukees beast?

11-10-2005 03:43 PM

Re: Milwaukee\'s Best Light commercials during WSOP

Does Ferguson give him a beer every time? If not then I think we have our answer. In the world of this commercial, hold-em or fold-em comes on every 10 minutes, and no one except college underclassmen drink Beast that fast.

11-10-2005 03:48 PM

Re: Milwaukee\'s Best Light commercials during WSOP

Or maybe they love poker so much that they only get beer during commercials, and if you get up in the middle of an intense hand to get another beer it would seem a little weird. But... if you have to get up anyway for some other reason... and happen to grab a beer while you're up, then no one thinks about it.

Does that make you happy joker? It's theoretically plausible.

Although I do have to say it's a lot more fun to bait you with inane comments about the logistics of a world-class poker champion living in one's refrigerator.

Re: Milwaukee\'s Best Light commercials during WSOP

In today's final ad during the final table climax, the guy finally just said, "I'm gonna go get a beer." So maybe it was all leading up to this. Fittingly, Ferguson finally said what we've all been waiting for: "Hey guys, can I get out of here?"

In all, an overtly literal ending to a fairly lame ad campaign.

I agree totally with PJ here.

The whole excuse thing was an odd device that just made you question something that didn't need to be questioned. It seems like they just threw it there to make the adds less formulaic, which is virtually impossible.

What I kept needing to know was what was the preflop action, stack size, pot size and when he says, "Hold/Fold 'em," I want to ask the donk, "Why do you say that?"

Army Eye 11-16-2005 05:55 AM

Re: Milwaukee\'s Best Light commercials during WSOP

Because.. his friends would start to realize something was up if he goes to get a beer EVERY time the hold'em/fold'em challenge was posed. So he acts like there are other reasons to get up, go to bathroom, let dog out, etc. and nobody is the wiser.

I've read these forums for quite a while, and I believe this may be the best thread I've come across.

Doesn't the guy complain of stomach distress multiple times, and then reappear in the living room before the hand ends?

What a talent.

It's obvious the guy is a pathological liar. His friends know this, which is why they ignore his wacky excuses and just figure to themselves, "He's going to get another beer."
