I love my 2001 FP, but...(slightly OT)

When I turn it on I get a screen that says

Dell | Ultra Sharp

or something like that. I am wondering if there's any way to make that disappear. I find the extra 5 seconds are vastly EV-

This is absurd. Just because you are a poker player doesn't mean everything is defined in ev. The startup screen of your 2001fp has no bearing on the expected value of anything.

Re: I love my 2001 FP, but...(slightly OT)

I think his time is worth something, thus it is -EV.

btw, this is a poker forum in case you didn't notice

you don't understand the meaning of 'EV'.

We are talking about five seconds, I'm quite sure that his computer doesn't boot up that fast. Calling it "vastly ev-" is drastically overstating things.

Re: I love my 2001 FP, but...(slightly OT)

I thinkk that a way to get rid of that little 'warm-up, pop-up' thing would be +EV.
So still having it is -EV.

I agree that it is not VASTLY -ev though.

Seems like your definition of -EV is anything that takes time away from poker, be it 5 seconds of poker. This means sleeping and eating and sh1tting are -EV, so I wouldn't recommend doing any of them, ever again.

Re: I love my 2001 FP, but...(slightly OT)

This is a really bad argument.

all of the above are necessary to human existence.

One could argue that the positive EV from poker helps us do all of those 'life functions' more comfortably.

I don't believe that a little 'Dell Ultra-sharp' pop-up for 5 seconds is all that necessary to human existence.

He's not even arguing that 'time away from poker' is -EV.
If I go to a rock-concert then that is 'time away from poker'.
but it's still +EV for me because of the entertainment value I get from the concert (if it's too loud though, then going deaf as a result of that concert would be -EV).

In fact, I would argue that TOO MUCH time playing poker is DEFINITELY -EV....because it is a waste of one's life.

But the status of having the 2001fp is such a big part of it. I'm not sure I could play my A game without my monitors reminding me how great I am every time I turn them on.

They are not reminding you how great YOU are, they are reminding you how great Dell is. Also, fwiw I turn off my screen when I walk away but leave my desktop on. Thus my computer does not have to boot up. And if it can display that stupid startup screen why can't it just display the screen I am on?

Now after reading all these replies which are very amusing.

Wouldn't it be cool if we could change the screen to anything we wanted? I wondering if there is a hack.

Re: I love my 2001 FP, but...(slightly OT)

Is it really that difficult to tell that I'm being vastly sarcastic in my OP?

The semantics aside, I do find the screen I mentioned moderately annoying. If there's a simple way to get rid of it, I'd like to know about it. Just to be clear, it is not the 'wasted' time that bothers me, as I can wait a few extra seconds to check my email, play poker, whatever...The intro screen is annoying in the same way that a pop up is annoying. Sure it only takes a second to get rid of (if it is not blocked), but I did not want it in the first place.

So should I infer from all the posts without an answer to my question that you all just live with it (or practice burping)?

Not allowing your $500.00 investment warm-up PROPERLY is even more -EV!

Not to go off on a tangent (because this thread is really, really good) ... but I think I'm going to put the above quote on a t-shirt.

That is all.

Why not just let your computer control it's power state? From what I can tell you have a choice of putting up with the "boot screen" of the monitor or paying for the 3 watts of electricity it uses on standby. I say burn the power.

I am honored. My attorney will contact you shortly to work out royalties.
