getting called into work when sick

i currently have the worst sore throat ever. i had a fever last night. my back, neck and chest hurt more than ever. i cant stop coughing. my nose is running and ive been dryheaving for the last few hours. (havent eaten anything all day, stomach growling a lot, but no apetite whatsoever)

i thought it was mono, but i guess its just a crappy cold. anyways, i had to call my boss last night at 10PM (i work graveyard, 12-9AM) and wake him up. he didnt sound happy and said hell need me tomorrow. i said id try and make it.

i just called him again and told him im feeling even worse today. he says he needs me. does this not sound stupid? i understand its my job, but why do boss' call in sick employees? does he not know i can get his other employees sick?

this sucks.

Re: getting called into work when sick

1. Sounds flu like and not cold like.
2. Sucks man, but don't sweat it. Don't go to work(but call in). Go to the doctor and find out whats wrong. Your boss can't fire you no matter what if you call in. Get documentation of your sickness though.

Re: getting called into work when sick

As a former supervisor, I have the following insight:

1. People often come into work after trying to come in sick given a little cajoling.

2. People often attempt to call in sick when not really sick.

3. A sick employee can often be productive enough to make the difference between getting [censored] from my boss and not getting [censored] from my boss.

The dryheaving is being caused by me coughing so much that I start to puke, not influenza.

I already called in and he told me I needed to be in.

I am not covered. No health insurance.

Yeah, my brother told me this earlier. I don't think he belives me to be honest, but I have no reason to lie. My mother works at the same place, and she's been a trusted employee for about 5 years. All he'd have to do is ask her if I was really sick. I don't know.

I wasn't doing a whole lot yesterday but coughing and forgetting where stuff goes.

Call your boss back and tell him your just to sick to come in. The worst he can do to you is fire you. If you are a valuable employee he's not going to that because A)its hard to find good employees B)It takes a long time to hire someone.

If you're not a valuable employee he wouldn't care so much that you called in and is already planning to fire you anyways.

I do not have cajones big enough for this. I've already made it very clear I am actually sick. Both times I have called, I woke his wife up, who in turn had to wake him up. That's his job, though, so I shouldn't feel too bad, but I do.

And currently I would say I am valued as our stock is backed up and they need all the help they can. Rotten time to get sick.

When you are really too sick you will, so in the case just suck it up and go in.

I called in sick one day with the runs, nausea, etc. My boss had an important project and there were a few other people out sick too, so she begged me to come in. After some serious begging, I finally broke down and came in, but I hate being anywhere when I have the runs, and you can understand why.

Anyway, I staggered through the day, making the occasional panicked sprint to the restroom, and finally started feeling a little better around 3:30 or so. The project got finished about a half hour later, and she asked me if I wanted to go home. I said no, it was only an hour left so I would stick it out since I was already here. So she wrote me up for coming in! Said if I were sick, I wouldn't have come in in the first place no matter how much she begged me. That's the thanks you get, eh?

Gotta be careful about doing evil people favors.

That sucks, Blarg. Man, I'm really hurting now. My chest and stomach are killing me. I can't breath too well either, most likely from all the coughing, I guess. Ughh. I do not think I'm even going to go in.

Re: getting called into work when sick

I made the mistake of going in when I was really sick "just to get my boss through the morning". Fuckhead kept me there for seven hours after promising to let me go after two. By the time I got home my fever was 102.7. I went in to see the doc an hour later and my fever was 103.5, I had a wicked sore throat, and when I coughed it felt like needles were piercing my lungs, and I had an ear infection on top of all that. [censored] your boss, don't go in.

Re: getting called into work when sick

Yeah, my throat is hurting like all hell. I'm afraid to eat because I'm sure I'll puke up whatever I eat. Although it'd probably feel better, dry heaving is the WORST.

This job is pissing me off. I'm doing physical labor crap for $7.8 an hour, even though I was told $8.05. I also hate the hell out of the graveyard shift. I should find other work, although I don't want to be a little bitch who couldn't hack work.

Re: getting called into work when sick

It's unlikely that you will get fired for this, depending on the company. Washington is an "emplyment at will" state, but has an "Implied Contract" excemtion, and a termination could be legally challenged if the firm or your boss implyed in any way that calling out sick was acceptable, and not grounds for termination. If it's a big company, I wouldn't worry about it, but a small firm might not care.

This was a law office where I did admin type crap. This kind of thing was pretty standard over there actually. It went on for years.

Yeah, I worked for a huge auto repair chain when I played hero and went in sick. You go in to Kroger and you'll be there all night wishing you hadn't sucked it up. But I forgot to tell you the best part of my story. I got my boss sick and it was way worse for him. So if your boss will be there and you can infect him there might be a silver lining to going in.

You've got 4000+ posts and have been on 2+2 for almost a year and you aren't playing poker for a living and obviously working some deadshit job, sucks to be you, I think you have bird flu also.

Yeah, I'm working a shitty job, it's my first. I played poker well enough to pay for small crap I needed.. clothes, food, etc. I have a tiny BR now because I could never move up due to small (yet very frequent) cashouts.

I didn't go. He called my house, my mom answered, she said he wasn't too pissed, but said they really needed me. She explained how crappy I was feeling.

Yeesh. Blarg, if a boss tried to write me up for something like that I'd have given her a choice -- either retract the write-up or I'm quitting.

I'm gonna start giving work my mom's phone number when I call in sick. Yeah, my mom's taking care of me. Call her.

I don't get this. Uh, my mom answered because I was asleep, assuming that's what you were referring to.

Anyway, I was called in again last night. As soon as I got there I was coughing nonstop and sweating profusely.. profusely I say! Anyway, I think I had a fever. I had to go outside to cool off like 3 times within the first hour.

Then I started coughing more until I was dryheaving again. Finally my coworker just said, "Go home, dude. If you're sick, you're sick."

I went home. Boss called today. He's calling me back in tonight. I hate being sick.

Went to work last night. Feeling slightly better until my coworker knocked over 2 [censored] cups and something went in my eye. My eyeball is now bloodshot and watering. It has been for about 15 hours now. I already went to the ER and they couldn't find anything. Tomorrow I have to go to an eye specialist to have him look at it.

This. sucks.
