Greatest Western of All Time - Nominations

It's been a while since the last tourney type movie poll, so how about one for westerns. I realize it will probably come down to Unforgiven and the Good, Bad, Ugly, or something like that, but what the heck. Nominate some of your preferred westerns, and we'll get this one going...

To start:

Rio Bravo
High Plains Drifter
Silverado

I think OUATITW is the easy choice.

I think "Unforgiven" is vastly overrated. Yes it's a good movie, but greatest western ever?

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Once Upon A Time In The West

IF IT COUNTS:
Legends of the Fall

Re: Greatest Western of All Time - Nominations

clearly unforgiven should be given consideration.

I thought Lonesome Dove was great, but not sure it counts for this.

The Shootist

The John Wayne one with the psycho wife...forget the name of it but it's good....

The Magnificent Seven
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Davey Crocket (or was that something Alamo?)

90% of John Wayne's work...

edit: It was 'The Alamo'

Rio Bravo is my favorite.

Some other good John Wayne westerns:
The Searchers
Stagecoach
McLintock!
Big Jake
Chism
Sons of Katie Elder
The Undefeated
The War Wagon
Red River

I don't know if it counts, but I always liked How the West was Won.

Outlaw Josie Wales is awesome.
Magnificent Seven may not have been as good as Seven Samurai, but it was still good.

The Magnificent Seven
1970's version.

But Clint is in a league of his own. One of his will win it when it comes to poll time.

As someone said, this may come down to simply John Wayne Vs Clint...

In the actual battle royale, why not just list:

Clint Movie
John Wayne Movie
and then others by name? OUATINW, Peckinpah, etc...

Swede,

Should this upcoming 'Big Dance' contain comedies?
What was your intent?

Re: Greatest Western of All Time - Nominations

I realize that Unforgiven will probably win it all, but to me anyway these polls aren't about what movie is the greatest in whatever category. Based on voting I often end up finding some cool movies which I hadn't seen or perhaps even been aware of. This is what makes it worthwhile to me.

I agree with Swede. I've sworn off getting mad at the result. It's good to discuss the nominees.

And unforgiven shouldn't win. The Searchers should, obviously.

Re: Greatest Western of All Time - Nominations

I think the John Wayne/Clint Eastwood factions will have a hard time settling on one film, since both of those guys did so many QUALITY westerns. If you broke this into categories, like "Drama", "Romance", "Comedy", etc., I think the only surefire thing that everybody would agree on is that Blazing Saddles is the best Western comedy ever made.

Well, personally I think this category should be allowed to be more open than some of the other specific genre. I think Blazing Saddles (to name one) should be allowed in here, if for no other reason because it was DQ'd from the comedy thread because of being made one year too early. But if there are lots of folks against including comedic westerns we can decide on it later.

My thoughts would be to exclude comedies. Besides Blazing Saddles and perhaps Cat Ballou, I don't think any other comedy would merit serious consideration anyways. I mean...Shanghai Knights? Rustlers' Rhapsody? Support Your Local Gunfighter? Umm....no.

"Hud" is one of my favorite movies ever, but I've never even thought of it as a western.

If Hud would qualify, what about Grapes of Wrath?
