when I'm eating/talking on the phone/whatever and only have one hand, and need a plus sign, I may.

You don't touch-type, do you....

Nope. That was about the only thing I didn't listen to in typing class and just got used to making Q W A S Z etc with my left hand only. Worked fine for me so far...

I type quickly and still don't use it. I probably should i just didn't get it down at the beginning and its a bad habit that has stuck. Using or not using it wouldn't seriously affect speed IMO

Sometimes you only have one hand free, and it is tough to use the shift key and reach a letter all the way on the other side of the keyboard. I often choose the shift key that is closest to the letter I want to use it with.

My left pinky finger is on the left shift key and another finger on the left hand is on one of those letters. Usually.

No, and I have no need for the second Ctrl or Alt keys either.

Why is the right one so far away from the ;? I think that is the root of the problem here.

Re: Do we really need two shift keys?

I use the one on the right for punctuation.

What would you replace it with?

I vote for either a third ctrl key or just making the key that types ? and / really long.

-McGee

PS--Did keyboards always have two "Shift" keys? Because I remember some keyboards with very large "Enter" keys that was roughly the size of the "Enter" and "Shift" keys on my current keyboard.

It depends on the keys I'm typing immediately before and after.

When I type the word "why" I use my left hand and when I type the word "you" I use my right hand.

Basically it seems that if my right hand is occupied the previous letter than I will use my left hand to type the 'y'.

Re: Do we really need two shift keys?

pinky finger and ring finger on left hand. They keys are right next to each other, the fingers are right next to each other...it's beautiful.

WackityWhiz 11-01-2005 04:06 PM

Re: Do we really need two shift keys?

I have a laptop, and my left pinky finger rests on the shift key when I'm not typing. I can barely get my right pinky finger to stretch to the other shift key.

I type 120-130wpm and the only key on my keyboard that I've never touched is the right shift key.

Complete waste. They should make it a porn shortcut button or something.

Nope, the left works pretty well. My left pinky handles the Shifting, my right pinky handles the Entering.

I use both. I agree with the poster who said the real useless keys are the duplicate Ctrl and Alt keys.

Re: Do we really need two shift keys?

I've just realized that I use the left shift key almost exclusively. I had always thought I use both. In fact so much so that I was about to respond that "of course you need both keys" until I started typing. Fascinating.

Re: Do we really need two shift keys?

When I first read this, I was postive I used both. I've discovered that I only use the one on the right, and NEVER on the left.

I'm left handed, which either explains that or means it makes no sense.
