Maybe we should get Jimy Williams back instead?
Garner is a great manager. |

Re: They brought back Phil Garner
and then in the world series, he made really big mistakes. many of them, including publicly denouncing his team during the WS.
f that. |
Re: They brought back Phil Garner
Sorry, but I feel that Garner simply called a spade a spade. It wasn't his fault the team can't get a simple base hit or even a freaking sacrifice fly when we need it. It's not his fault freaking Willy T couldn't even get a bat on the ball when even a groundout would tie the game. It's not his fault our supposed big-time hitter Ensberg strikes out when even a double-play gets the tying run home.
The team didn't execute, plain and simple. The White Sox didn't play well this series and the Stros had plenty of chances, but choked. |
Re: They brought back Phil Garner
He had chances to change that lineup, he didnt. He kept baggy in DHing and PHing when he couldnt hit the broadside of a barn. He takes out our only performing pitcher after only 100 pitches, and then puts in the guy who's given away two games.
These are awful mistakes. I guess we just had to reward him for the WS. He didnt do much to get us there, except keep people in when we were down and out in the beginning of the season. Why does he deserve this endless praise again? |
Re: They brought back Phil Garner
Man...halfway through 2004, the Astros were the picture of awful. They had plenty of talent, but absolutely sucked. They hire Garner, and the team rebounds, wins the wildcard, wins its first playoff series EVER, and get to the NLCS for the first time since 1986. Then, this season...the team started off in a huge hole due to injuries and so many young players -- he helps engineer the turnaround, win the wildcard, take the team to a second-straight NLCS, win the pennant for the first time EVER, and make it to the World Series.
Certainly, I agree he made mistakes during the WS (I even posted about that)...but come ON -- who else do you want managing this team? After what the Astros have accomplished over the last two seasons, you think Garner deserves to be FIRED? Gotta be kidding me. |
Re: They brought back Phil Garner
Yet Guillen throws gum out of his mouth, and a water bottle in the dugout b/c his players couldn't execute.
As a Houstonian, I'm THRILLED that Garner is back! Everyone else can suck it. Two seasons here he's led us to within 1 game of the WS in '04, and into the WS in '05. That is the best showing for any team in all of MLB over the last two years. But it would be nice to have an over-priced mannequin like Torre leading our troops. Or how 'bout Bobby Cox? Or Dusty Baker? LOLOLOL Yes, Tom Verducci knows how the players feel about Gar! HAHAHA. Ausmus loves Garner b/c Garner loves Ausmus. Garner has publicly said that Ausmus will be a manager some day and that he is going to try to help make that happen for him. No link. It was on local radio talk show, but still, that says a lot. GREAT TO HAVE YOU BACK GARNER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Re: They brought back Phil Garner
Garner is a great motivator, that is why he could rally that team back from the cellar. But I have to say that I think he made alot of poor decisions in the World Series. I pretty much blame Games 1 & 2 on him.
Here are mistakes I think he made: 1) Game 1 leaving Mike Lamb in the face Cotts with 1 & 3 and one out in the 8th when he could have brought in a better contact/speed guy like say Burke or Viz to face the lefty when then you could probably make a squeeze play or let Burke hit who has good enough speed to hopefully stay out of the DP. 2.) Game 1 leaving Bagwell in to face Jinks in the 8th with 1 & 3 and 2 outs when Bagwell clearly did not have the bat speed to handle Jinks, and he had shown that all through this season. Viz or Palmerio would have been a much better matchup for us. 3.) Game 3 letting Taveras hit with 1 & 3 with the winning run on 3rd, when again a strike out kills you and Taveras is known chase poor pitches, if you leave him in you have to squeeze I think. Either Safety or Suicide. But I think again Palemerio would have been a better matchup here. 4.) Leaving Ensberg in the 4 slot when he clearly had no clue at the plate. 5.) Bascially I felt like Garner let Guillen dictate pretty much every matchup in the series. |

Take a stance. |
Re: They brought back Phil Garner
I think what houston really needs is a manager who can make sure the team plays the game the right way in a Tournament Style format.
|
Re: They brought back Phil Garner
That would be a Nay from me if their is anyone else out there that would be able to do a sufficent job. Not sure what the market is like.

Who else is out there that you'd rather have? Again, no other team in all of MLB had a better back-to-back postseason run than the Astros. |
Re: They brought back Phil Garner
I would rather have a manager that is better at game management rather than motivation. I often think Garner is gun shy when it comes to pulling the trigger to make hard decisions in important games.
I don't think they should fire him after he got them to the WS but I think there are alot of coaches out there that manage games alot better than Garner. |

Re: They brought back Phil Garner
Would have to say the Astros' postseason results these last two years have been better than the Cards'.
Both teams got swept in the WS, but Houston's WS was much more competitive. Just a few hits in key situations and it's Houston sweeping Chicago instead of the other way around. And last season, the Stros were only a few outs away from the WS, with a lead in the sixth inning of game 7 and Clemens on the hill, before finally losing. This year, other than game 1 and one pitch to Pujols in game 5, the Stros dominated the Cardinals in the NLCS. |

[/ QUOTE ] It's only as simple as that if you didn't watch the games or you are talking out your ass. Cards won a very close NLCS in 7 games, with Houston going back to STL up 3 games to 2 and STL needing to win both their remaining games. Astros won an NLCS that they pretty much dominated in 6 games. In the 2004 WS, Boston dominated STL, winning each of the final 3 games by three runs or more. In the 2005 WS, the White Sox won 2 games by two runs, and two games by 1 run, with one of the two run victories coming in 14 innings. |

Re: They brought back Phil Garner
You guys are never gonna get anywhere... steel is right because the stros played harder, and made more of a contest out of it, and dirty is right because in the end, it all comes down to the W.
|
Re: They brought back Phil Garner
Nah, they played 4 games in the WS last year and only 5 in the NLCS this year.
Astros played 4 and 7. Nitpicking, yes, but trying to prove point. |

Neither one made the playoffs. Nevermind that one was competitive and missed the playoffs by one game and the other was mired in the cellar the entire year. |
Re: They brought back Phil Garner
philly- 10th
colarado- 28th houston- 2nd cardinals- 3/4th can you go quickly look up who has won the most games the last two years out of the cards and astros? k thnx |
Re: They brought back Phil Garner
voltron, just let it go. he's trying to justify his team losing. that's fine, it happens to all of us sometimes.
|
Re: They brought back Phil Garner
Not justifying anything. And I'm through with this thread. It is impossible trying to reason with you. It's obvious you didn't really pay attention to the NL playoffs the last couple of years, otherwise you might see what i'm talking about.
