Re: Americans are awesome
This is awesome. One of the best posts in OOT. I was so sad to find out it is not true. Or you Americans claim its untrue anyways.

Re: Americans are awesome
True or not, stories like this are always entertaining to me. I love urban legends of all types, but the horror/campfire ones are the best, like 'The Hook in the Car Door'.

This is less believable than the Blair Witch Project

Re: Americans are awesome
the always leave off the rest of the conversation:
Canadians: This is the lighthouse. Your Call. Americans: Fire. Ensuing sounds of a lighthouse being shelled to the bottom of the ocean. |

Re: Americans are awesome
It does represent an American world-view very nicely, and a
'rest-of-the-world' view even better. In that sense, it's allegorical nature is ageless, and remains both amusing and representative of current world culture. I don't interpret anything in the document about naval vessels depending on lighthouses - I think your projecting your own issues onto my statement/the original text here. Ding-Ding round two... |

[/ QUOTE ] I'm not projecting any issues. There was no rally-round-the-flag in my statements. I just meant that it was funny once, but it's a really, really old joke and not at all funny anymore. |

You actually think naval vessels depend on lighthouses so as not to crash into things? [/ QUOTE ] This is true, they don't. But, they do run into things occasionally. This results in the current CO never being allowed to have a ship ever again and promptly retire or sit behind a desk for the rest of his/her career. My bro took temporary command of a ship in the Gulf last year due to an inept CO colliding with a big bouy of some sort, See USS Firebolt . |
Re: Americans are awesome
a funny story, but in this case it isn't actually true.

Whenever you see something that seems too ridiculous to be true, check snopes.

The British Are Awesome
Towards the end of WW2, the Germans were trying desperately trying ploys to halt their coming defeat. One such measure was the building of decoy airfields. They built one such field in Holland, out of wood. There were wooden hangers, oil tanks, gun emplacements, trucks, and aircraft. It took weeks and weeks of time and work, and finally the task was complete. That very day, a lone RAF bomber came into view, circled the field once above the strangely silent anti-aircraft guns, and then dropped its payload.
A large, wooden bomb. |
