Culpepper may be out for season

[ QUOTE ]
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper could miss the rest of the season after injuring his right knee against Carolina on Sunday, coach Mike Tice said.

``The quarterback doesn't appear to be in good shape,'' Tice said. ``I'm not a doctor, but the initial tests are not good. It doesn't appear that it's going to be anything that we as Vikings will want to hear.

``Things happen that are devastating. This certainly, if it's as serious as it appears, is devastating to our football team.''

[ QUOTE ]
Vikings trainer Chuck Barta said the team hadn't ruled out a possible torn anterior cruciate ligament in Culpepper's knee.

?

Actually, Johnson is probably one of the better backups in the league. Not that anyone could save this team.

I know. You should've went with something more purple-ish (if there is any, I didn't look).

I think it's growing on me.

I just saw this on ESPN. That looked ugly.

* If Culpepper is done for the season, the Vikings will be in the market for a new backup to Brad Johnson . VU has been told Jeff George might make overtures to let Tice know he is still available.

Tice is right, this could be devastating. They might go from like the 30th best team in the league to the 31st or 32nd.

Re: Culpepper may be out for season

Jim Souhan is a columnist for the Minneapolis paper who knows the team well. He wrote today that he doubts that Culpepper will ever return to top form:

[ QUOTE ]
...Culpepper has performed poorly this season, for reasons ranging from the loss of Randy Moss, Scott Linehan and Matt Birk to his already nagging knee pain.

If Culpepper hadn't been himself the past two months, this injury promises to turn him into someone else altogether for the rest of his career.

As recently as last year, one could compare Culpper to the quicksilver Michael Vick. As soon as next season, you might be comparing him to Byron Leftwich--a stationary quarterback with a strong arm and a spotty resume.

Re: Culpepper may be out for season

I'd say Culpepper has always been more Leftwich than Vick.

Or rather Leftwich is a poor man's Culpepper.

Re: Culpepper may be out for season

Just confirmed, Culpepper is out for the season. It sounds like his knee was torn up pretty badly:

[ QUOTE ]
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minnesota (Ticker) - Daunte Culpepper's nightmarish season is over.

Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Tice confirmed Monday that his star quarterback has a torn ACL, MCL and PCL in his right knee.

Culpepper suffered the injury following an 18-yard run on the final play of the first quarter in Sunday's 38-13 loss at Carolina when was hit by cornerback Chris Gamble.

Wow, looks like he got the full McGahee.

It seems Culpepper will miss some and maybe all of the 2006 season.

Re: Culpepper may be out for season

The correct name is the "O'Donghue's Triad" or the "Terrible Triad." Yeah, it's the McGahee injury. Other ones that come to mind: Rodney Harrison, Trent Green, Michael Lewis (version Beerman).

Possibly inaccurate and incomplete list of FA QBs...

Jeff George
Quincy Carter
Chris Chandler
Shaun King
Jonathen Quinn
Tim Couch
Chris Redman
Rick Mirer
Jim Miller (injured?)
Danny Kanell
Chad Hutchinson
Jesse Palmer
Doug Johnson
Rohan Davey
Arena League/CFL QBs
and a bunch of pratice squad guys.

I'd go George, Couch, Redman, Davey. The rest, pass.

He might have a four game suspension whenever he comes back. I don't know if he's still in rehab.

No way Johnson gets injured with that excellent offensive line, right. Also, Shaun Hill...great backup.

Re: Culpepper may be out for season

I thought you were implying they sign a new backup, instead of a third stringer.

benfranklin 11-01-2005 07:35 PM

Re: Culpepper may be out for season

I think they are going to be looking for a new starter, or at least someone that can be groomed to start relatively soon. At the last press conference, Tice indicated that Culpepper's rehab would likely extend into the 2006 season.

Of course, it is highly unlikely that Tice's job will extend into the 2006 season.

Brad Johnson back for another go around and looking pretty good, albeit against the Lions.
