Search Limitation

The new system restricts how many searches you can make. If you try to search within a few minutes of your last search, you are blocked.

Also, I put an animated gif in my signature, but it doesn't seem to allow it (too much height I think - I'll try a smaller one)

Anyone notice that Dynasty's avatar is now one of the "stock avatars" you can choose?

You cannot make another search at this time. Please try again in a few minutes.

this sucks balls, as does the sigs and the lack of displaying how many new posts.

But you can post a poll in a reply. Isn't that cool?

This is a huge problem. The other stuff is very minor, but limiting searches will have a big impact on people starting crappy threads because they couldn't find what they wanted quickly. I'm really hoping it's temporary.

All the old features that were deleted last year (like the polls and signatures) have been returned.

This would be great if moderators had the ability to selectively disable fundtions like these for individual users.

I'm guessing you're right. But this is a huge problem. Now everyone will start new threads instead of searching. How will that impact bandwidth costs?

Did anyone ever really do a search before starting a new thread, or is that just something we yelled at newbs to do. Personally I only ever search when looking for a thread I've already read.

Re: Search Limitation

Searching the archives of bajillion posts isn't cheap in terms of computing power, especially running multiple searches at the same time. I suspect this is why they added the recent 6 month time frame limitation and why this new limitation has been added.

But I agree, it sucks.

Why do I get the feeling that in one fell swoop of upgrade, well intentioned forum providers have eviscerated three diligent weeks of [censored]'s work?

I do it. I also do a lot of searching in the strategy forums. It will really suck if we can't search in those forums. And the impact on the books forum will be insane.

I'm telling you, you're right. These changes have almost no impact on bandwidth. They will have a major (positive) impact upon CPU/DB load.

Re: Search Limitation

I've done searches to point people to existing threads on their topic. This is not to be a douche. But the search is poor, and it is easier to find something that you have seen before than find threads related to something you want to know.

The search function is weak as is. Limiting users to one search every X makes it practically unusable.

MelK 10-30-2005 12:48 PM

Re: Search Limitation

Every time you click on someone's username and take a look at their posts, that counts as a search too.

Let's hope this is temporary. Maybe it's limited for now while they upgrade it? Too optimistic?

waffle 10-30-2005 12:52 PM

Re: Search Limitation

I think that's too optimistic -- they took down the entire forum while they upgraded. I don't think this would be a temporary measure for the upgrade. Here's my optimistic view:

Maybe the new search limitation is a default setting in the upgraded software, and if we petition the forum-master(s) they will change it back to the way it used to be.

I'm pretty sure this is not temporary. This is one of the topics I emailed Chuck about when I discovered this limitation in the archives forum (thats why it was the first thing I checked when I saw we had an upgrade).

Since Chuck knew about this for weeks, it must have been a conscious decision to do this.

Given that the censoring is also not working, I'm guessing they'll still be making modifications though. Maybe they'll fix this too.

ok. I found out, this search limitation can definitely be reset in the software to allow for more searches. This really needs to be done.
