Please don\'t be this guy

I'm dealing a single table satalite and this situation came with the same player over and over. An example conversation went something like this.

Dealer "Sir.. it's to you", Sir, it's to you, Sir, it's to you".

Player "What"?

Dealer "It's your turn to act."

Player "Ohhh How much"?

Dealer "Your first to act. It's $50, the amount of the big blind."

Player "............................"

Dealer "It's still up to you"

Player "I'm thinking",... I call".

Action.. Flop

Dealer "Sir.. it's to you", Sir, it's to you, Sir, it's to you".

Player "Who's turn is it?"

Dealer "Yours"

Player "What"?

Dealer "Sir, if you can't follow the action please put the I-Pod away".

Player "What"?

Dealer "Sir, please act on your hand"

Player "What are the cards out there, I can't see."

Dealer "Take of the glasses and you might be able to see".

Player "If I take off my glasses they can get a read on me. It's your job to tell me what the flop is".

Dealer "OHHH REALLLLLY".

It's my job to take money off of tools like this by betting and raising them out of pots, since 90% of them are weak-tight "fit or fold" type donkeys.

Game set and match. No trial, straight to the nut-kicking.

When he's already in the hand I would look for the slightest movement, perhaps a finger-tap to the music, and call it a 'check'.
I would also consider doing it in such a way so that he doesn't know that he checked. If/when he finds out later that he checked and gets upset then too freaking bad.

I also wonder why you can't MAKE him put the I-Pod away.
After he is late on 2 or 3 turns then he either puts it away OR he is folded or checked every time he doesn't know it's his turn.

Alternatively, I would yell sarcastically loud at the guy and scare the crap out of him "It's your turn sir!!"

In other words, there has to be some way to take more decisive action on this guy (and, unfortunately, that whole kicking him in the nuts bit isn't THAT viable an option, even though it would certainly be preferred).

We are considering banning "all electronics" at the table...one of the reasons being Ipods slowing then action. Cool with me.

I'd hope you guys can find a way to allow them with discretion for those who can use a DAP and not slow the game down.

All it takes is a floor confidnet enough to say "sir, you are slowing down the game, you will have to put away the IPOD............. yes I know he has an IPOD, he isn't slowing down down the game."

Re: Please don\'t be this guy

I agree completely.

I think the phrase "all it takes is a floor confident enough to" is something that could apply to A LOT of thread in here.

The guy who stank so bad that players left the room (but the floor never dealt with him).
The guyat the bike who was yelling profanities and racist remarks whom the floor still wouldn't kick out.
The guy who is so distracted that he is slowing down the game.

etc etc etc.

If you stink horribly, or yell profanity, or simply slow down the game, then freaking DEAL with these guys so that the playing experience can be pleasureable for everyone.

I also agree that there it is not necessary to ban ALL I-pods (or other headphones).
If you can play with the IPod then good for you.
If you can't and keep holding things up then simply don't allow him to listen to music if he wants to continue playing there.

Simply asking him to "please pay attention" obviously wasn't doing the trick.
That means it's time to take the NEXT step.
But it seems that MANY rooms refuse to do that...and will just continue to take the same step over and over regardless of the fact that it's completely ineffective.

FWIW, if you read the tread, the other floor person and I were deciding who whould be the one to toss his stinky butt, but left on his own first - he was there about 15 mintues or so.

If someone farts once, do you expect the floor to 86 him? Repeatedly fogging the pace, yes.

Frankly, I doubt the ban will happen, but you would be surprised how many complaints I get about guys slowing the game down while donning Ipods.

Then you'll have some internet trained moron yelling discrimination because he can't use the Ipod when someone else can. Either the same rule goes for everyone, or no one. None of the selective enforcement crap I keep seeing lately.

Well since we have this rule dealing with the actual play of the game.

8. The same action may have a different meaning, depending on who does it, so the possible intent of an offender will be taken into consideration. Some factors here are the person’s amount of poker experience and past record.

I thikn it woudl naturally follow that you only tell offenders to put away the IPOD. The rule isn't that some people can have it and some can't; the rule is NOBODY will delay the game.

This is very good rule to have. I would suport this 100%.

Although I would probably bring a portable DVD player with me

Just being devils advocate here, but do feel the same way about cell phones? If someone is keeping up with the action but talking away for 15 minutes on a cell, is that worthy of a talking to by the floor? It's not delaying the game at all, just annoying the players who have to listen to to it.

Here we have a "no cell phone use at the table" rule (wether you're in the current hand or not), so it's not an issue that the floor has to deal with at all which is nice.

Re: Please don\'t be this guy

Our rule is that we allow phones but if you slow down the game, you "may" lose your hand. Any communication on the phone about your hand will kill it imediately. I've seen that happen many times at the table.

Lots of rooms in Vegas are close to sports books and phone useage isn't allowed near a sports book. So that eliminates a lot of it.

Cell phones are in a different catagory becasue they can be distracting to the other players. I see nothign wrong with someoen calling their voice mial, text messaging etc at the table, but if they are going to talk on the phone they should step away from the table as a courtesy to the other players.

Re: Please don\'t be this guy

I know that you guys were talking about tossing him...but never actually did.

I don't recall seeing that he was only there for 15 minutes (I either missed that part...or it wasn't there). For some reason I was thinking it was longer (like an hour or so) but that was probably just my imagination.

Actually....the whole idea of "Fart and you're gone!!" might not be such a bad idea!!

Re: Please don\'t be this guy

The only thing that worries me about text messaging is that ir allows for players to covertly communicate with each other.

Re: Please don\'t be this guy

Cell phone use isn't allowed in Louisiana. The State Police (they do gaming control) have a problem with it. The dealer is supposed to kill the hand/deal you out.
