Moving to Vegas....Help Needed!!!

Hello All. I'm moving to Vegas in mid December and need help finding an apartment. I've been to Vegas many times but have never strayed far from the strip and have no idea about the surrounding areas. I need help at least figuring out what areas are best. Here's what's important to me:

-I'd like to spend $800-$1100 / mo on a 1-bedroom spacious apartment
-I'd like to be close to the strip (<10 minute drive prefferable)
-I'd like to live in a decent area....I'd like it to be mostly white / middle class section of town. I don't want to fear for my life when walking around at night
-I'm 25 and single so close proximity to young people would be nice.
-close proximity to shopping would be nice.

Please help me in any way you can. I don't necessarily need specific apartment complexes but general areas, web-sites with more info, or other relavant info would be helpful....

For those of you currently in Vegas, i look forward to seeing you at the tables there. Thanks in advance for the help!

I knew that was coming.....When i moved to Houston after college i accidently moved into an all minority neighborhood (okay, almost all minorities)....Anyway, i felt sort of weird and out of place being the only white guy in the apartment complex. If that makes me a racist than so be it. It was also a little disturbing hearing gunfire at night (the area i moved to was Greens Point affectionately nicknamed 'Guns Point')...Anyway, i have nothing against people that are different than me but i tend to feel more comfortable around white people.

so a simple "upper middle class" neighborhood wouldn't cut it if there are too many minorities around?

well, at least you're honest about it. i'm sure i have white neighbors who are sick to their stomachs that someone like me can afford to live in the luxury apartment next door to them.

nothing wrong with being honest.

somehow if someone says they want to live around white people it's wrong, but if they say they only date red heads it's ok.

Re: Moving to Vegas....Help Needed!!!

Okay, this is going in the wrong direction. A black or other minority neighbor would not bother me at all. I have many black friends. On a percentage basis though i relate with a higher percentage of white people than with black people. If my tone was racist, i apologize. If a white person says he'd like to live in a 'mostly white' neighborhood it's of course because he's a racist. If a black person wanted to live around other black people i think most would find that perfectly acceptable. I'm tired of that double standard.

It was amazingly close to my office and was in a rather convenient location. Yes, i should have done a little more due dilligence. It actually worked out okay though.

You will have a tough time getting all the variables you desire in one place.

You can get everything you want, except the 10 minutes to the strip part, in any of the following areas:

Green Valley
Coronado Ranch
Silverado Ranch
Summerlin

These areas are about a 20 minute drive to the strip. Summerlin is in the Northwest. The other areas are in the Henderson/Southwest area.

The longer you are here, the more you will appreciate being away from the strip.

Well i was defending racism. I'm am to some degree a racist. I believe that 99.5 percent of all people are racist to some degree (that includes blacks and other minorities). I'm honest about it.

If i'm in a cafeteria with 2 tables, one filled with black people and the other filled with white people (and no other information) i will sit at the one with the white people (and not at a table randomly).

Thanks....These are just the sort of insights i am looking for. My desire to be near the strip has mainly to do with the convenience of playinig poker. I definitely would like the convenience of playing multiple short sessions in any given day without the hassle of spending much time driving back and forth from home. That said, the other stuff is probably just as important so i have some thinking to do.

Re: Moving to Vegas....Help Needed!!!

There are some nice places near the strip, but above your designated price range.

The apartments in your price range are near UNLV and/or in poor neighborhoods.

Driving to the stip is a little bit of a pain on weekend nights, but not really that big of a deal.

If you are in the Henderson/Southwest there are some really soft lower-limit games ($4/8 & $6/12 limit and $2/5 NL) at Sunset Station and Green Valley Ranch. You will have to either play online or go to the strip to get a bigger game.

That's not the way it works. Going to the strip is a time commitment, it isn't like going to the mall. There is a LOT of traffic throughout the day, and going anywhere on the Strip in a vehicle is a pain. The casinos themselves are labyrinthine, and take a good 10-15 minutes to navigate. The Strip was built for tourists not locals and there is a good reason we tend to stay away from it. It is anything but "convenience".

You don't need to worry about walking around at night, it's really not that dangerous in Vegas.

no those are not great areas. All the apts near the strip are bad or way over your price range. You should consider renting a house in west las vegas off the 215. We have a 4 bedroom 2000 sq house for 1400 a mo. You could find a nice 2 bedroom w/ a loft in in your price range. I made one room into an office to play online. It is only a 10 min drive to the strip if you aviod rush hour. Houses are cheap here, only a chump would live in an apt.

try silverado ranch or green valley in henderson.
summerlin has nice parts but is more than 10 min away from strip.... try to stay west or south of strip....i live on maryland and sahara ( northeast of strip ), and there are definitely more desirable neighborhoods. good luck, vegas is awesome.

1 reason is to move closer to the rest of my family (who are in LA). Another is for some change in general (i'm currently living in CT which i don't particularly like)....The main attraction for me to vegas would be the poker....

I used to live in the LVCC until they turned my complex into condos and kicked me out. Did my shopping at that Albertsons.

I am living near Eastern and Tropicana, not far from UNLV and the airport, The first week I was there there was a gun battle in the (condo) complex. Can't say that I would recommend this neighborhood.

After I found out today how badly underinsured my house is under my flood policy, I will be lucky to have any kind of a roof over my head. I think I'm gonna have to get used to gun battles, drunken brawls in the broad daylight, and domestic violence every day between 1 and 2 am.

I also found out that I had more homeowner's insurance than the house is worth. I'd like to shoot my agent. (See what a few weeks in the wild west has done for me.)

I plan on moving to vegas in May. I have the same concerns. Any none weirdos that live there now or is moving in the mean time let me know of some good home games ect.. Moving there not knowing anyone.

Re: Moving to Vegas....Help Needed!!!

Probably moving there myself from MA. Most likely in mid November.

I have a buddy who lives out there and this was his recommendations:

"If you look at Google Earth or Maps or whatever, you're going to want
to stay on the west side of Rainbow and north of Sahara. Besides the
general "Las Vegas", another city that's really nice is Summerlin, so
you can look for that. Basically, Summerlin is the
central-westernmost part of Las Vegas. Might be a little pricey
there...

Avoid the stretch bordered by Jones on the east, Rainbow on the west,
Charleston on the south and Lake Mead on the north. Ghetto. It looks
nice, but that's the area I was staying when I first got here where my
car was broken in to. Sadly, it's probably heaven compared to
everything east of it.

There are some exceptions to all this, both good and bad, but you can
safely stick with this until you know your way around. "
