alright, here's a brief list of films that at one point or another have been called the best film everby some sort of critic or supposed expert. There's not doubt people will have issue with many of the choices, but I tried to get a good cross section of films people might rally behind.

Too bad you can't take off a couple of movies guaranteed to get no votes (8 1/2, The Grand Illusion) and replace them with a couple of movies guaranteed to get a ton of votes (The Shawshank Redemption, City Of God).

LofA for me too. Needed several more (Lord of the Rings, one of the Powell/Pressberger films, blah, blah), but I'm not criticising the OP - good effort.

I would likely attribute this to the twenty-something nature of this board. I voted for The Godfather as it's the best movie listed (For some reason, I could never get my head around Citizen Kane.)

One wonders how many people responding to this pole have seen each of these movies, though.

Greatness doesn't have much to do with it. I am not a huge LOTR fan FWIW, but as an aside, I consider Pulp Fiction a great movie, yet it's clearly not the best film ever by any stretch of the imagination.

So no, LOTR does not belong on this list at all.

Someone please explain why Cool Hand Luke is even considered decent. I watched it after reading reviews from another thread but was highly disappointed. There was almost no plot, no development, the escape scenes were boring and on top of that he got caught 3x! It was sad to see Luke become everyone's bitch after he admitted he was nothing in the real world. And who cares if he can eat 50 eggs...
