Best and Worst Sports Broadcasters
Active broadcasters only. Yes, I know this has been sorta discussed in other places. Based on recent performance only.
Best Play by Play: Al Michaels Worst Play by Play: Dick Enberg Best Color: Steve Stone Worst Color: George Foreman (if he still does boxing color) Worst Color: Pat Hayden (if Foreman isn't eligible Best Studio Analyst: Charles Barkley Worst Studio Analyst: Magic Johnson (edging out Kruk) Best Studio Host: Bob Costas (when he's doing it - Chris Fowler when he's not) Worst Studio Host: Linda Cohn (edging out Berman) |
Re: Best and Worst Sports Broadcasters
Worst Play by Play: Anyone from Fox's MLB coverage
Best Color: Steve Stone Worst Color: Anyone from Fox's MLB coverage Best Studio Analyst: Ron Jaworski Worst Studio Analyst: John Kruk, Anyone from Fox's MLB coverage Best Studio Host: Sal Palontonio (sp) Worst Studio Host: Stuart Scott, Anyone from Fox's MLB coverage I'm the only person not bothered by Berman, as long as he stays away from baseball. |
Re: Best and Worst Sports Broadcasters
I feel like McCarver has to be in here for something.
edit: good choice on Linda Cohn though, she is just insufferable at times edit2: I don't know how people feel about Joe Buck, but I think he's very good |
Re: Best and Worst Sports Broadcasters

Best Play by Play: Al Michaels [/ QUOTE ] I don't like him. He often ignores the action in the game for long periods of time to focus on his conversations with Madden, the sideline reporters and shills for the shows on the network. |
Re: Best and Worst Sports Broadcasters
Best Color: Steve Stone
95% of my knowledge of the game of baseball came from this man. To those who got their first exposure to Stoney this year on ESPN, what do you all think of him? cubs |
Re: Best and Worst Sports Broadcasters
Kicking Stone out of the booth shows how [censored] retarded the entire Cubs organization is.
[ QUOTE ] 95% of my knowledge of the game of baseball came from this man. [/ QUOTE ] ditto. |
Re: Best and Worst Sports Broadcasters
Very good choice on Sir Charles. There is no more entertaining personality in sports IMO.
|
Re: Best and Worst Sports Broadcasters
Best:
Al Michaels Keith Jackson (in his prime) Brad Nessler Worst: Brent Musburger Joe Morgan Pat Summerall |
Re: Best and Worst Sports Broadcasters
Best Play-by-play: JP Dellacamera.
|
Re: Best and Worst Sports Broadcasters
Best PBP: Gary Thorne. No matter the sport, he is very professional and always adds something to the game.
|
Re: Best and Worst Sports Broadcasters
Worst Anything: ESPN Sunday Night Football crew
re Musberger: While I don't think he's good, he's not terrible enough for me to not be able to tune him out. |

Worst Anything: ESPN Sunday Night Football crew [/ QUOTE ] Paul McGuire and Joe Theisman make me want to beat the living [censored] out of them. Also, I'm surprised no one's given any props to Joe Buck. |

Re: Best and Worst Sports Broadcasters
I like Johnny Miller as a color guy.
Lousy color guys: Theisman, that Paul guy he is with, Joe Morgan, Sutcliffe. ESPN is horrible at picking these guys. |
Re: Best and Worst Sports Broadcasters
Best PbP: Harry Kalas. I live in Boston and I still tune in to the Phillies station at night when I can get it to hear Kalas call a game. He's already been inducted the Baseball HoF, and will probably be in the NFL HoF someday as well (he replaced the late, great John Facenda as the voice of NFL Films).
Worst PbP: So many bad ones out there. I guess I'll go with Mike Patrick. Best Color: I'm going to pass on picking a best. I do want to say, as a non-Yankee fan, that I really like the work that Suzyn Waldman does on 880. I like to listen to baseball while I drive, even if it's teams I don't really care for. On the few Yanks' games I listened to, she did a solid job, and seemed to bring a lot of knowledge to the booth. It's nice to see a woman get a shot at a broadcasting job more involved than putting on make-up and asking "Coach, your team is down 28-0, are you going to make some changes for the 2nd half?" Worst Color: You want to talk about bad announcers? You want to talk about a guy who has no business broadcasting a major professional sport? I want you to look at something here. I want you to look at Paul Maguire. Best Host: Costas does a decent job on "Inside the NFL" Worst Host: Pick someone who does an NFL pregame show. Any one of them, any of the 3 networks. Best Studio Analyst/Reporter: Chris Mortensen. He has a Bat Phone to every GM in the league. Worst Studio Analyst: Magic. He was possibly better as a talk show host. |
Re: Best and Worst Sports Broadcasters
I'm really happy to see all the Steve Stone support here. He is the best baseball broadcaster there is.

He suffers from the Al Michaels "I think I'll start telling some long story or talking about some pointless stats while completely ignoring the action on the field" syndrome. Also he completely flipped out when Randy Moss did the pulling-pants-down routine in Green Bay last year, acting like Moss was raping his mother on the 50-yard-line or something. Grow up. |

[/ QUOTE ] That's because he actually is funny. He doesn't take himself too seriously. I think more play by play guys should try that. You should see him kareoke(sp?), he's freakin hilarious.... |

To me, the general sillyness and willingness to say goofy things makes him a very good PbP guy. And he can turn it off in a heartbeat, when he needs to. Perhaps you feel like he's "trying to hard" to be funny, which would make it seem not genuine? |
Re: Best and Worst Sports Broadcasters

Is this some kind of bizzare parody? I have no problem with women announcers. Pam Ward does a fine job. [/ QUOTE ] No. The few times I have heard Waldman, I honestly enjoyed her announcing. I have no problem with the concept of women announcers either. I commented because, in my sheltered life, I haven't heard a woman announcer other than Waldman, only sideline reporters (don't watch much CFB, haven't heard Ward). And I think this has more to do with prejudice by the networks (or their assumption of predjudice by their viewers) than with overall ability. And it's nice to see that changing, at least a little bit. And for the Yankees fans who say she's terrible, maybe I've caught her on good days. Or maybe we'll just differ on this one. |
Re: Best and Worst Sports Broadcasters
I think a basic problem with chicks as announcers is their voice. Women's voices are too high pitched and squeaky for announcing. That Jeannie whats-her-name on Fox is horrible. Tom Brenemann (who I like BTW) even smoked just to get his voice tone in the right place.
MAybe if they could run their voices through some type of converter........ |

Re: Best and Worst Sports Broadcasters
Dan Fouts is a moron.
It seems week after week we listen to him make broad, over-reaching statements, that are often just incorrect. Also, he must possess some rare sight ability, as he often will say, "watch this" to prove his point, and yet his description of the play never seems to come through on the replay. |
