James Bond and Hold\'em Part II

On www.imdb.com it says that Casino Royale's plot is:
James Bond must thwart a dangerous Russian spy from winning a No-Limit Texas Holdem game of Poker worth millions.

Any insight?

Is this too much poker content for OOT?

That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard of. Has anyone read the book? Is that REALLY the plot?

I read it but it was over 20 years ago. I they played Baccarat in the original. However, I don't recall that it was central to the plot. I could be wrong though.

This is a joke. The book does feature a game of bacarrat between Bond and the villain, though.

Let me suggest that you could probably get a lively discussion going in the WPT forum over something like, "Which professional poker player would make the best James Bond villian?"

Re: James Bond and Hold\'em Part II

It was central to the plot (Bond was trying to bankrupt a communist cell in France), and there's no reason they can't change it from baccarat to holdem.

Like I said it was over 20 years ago. He was going to bankrupt the commies by beating them at baccarat?

I remember them playing baccarat.
Are you saying I'm joking and it doesn't say that or that IMDB is joking?

That would likely be their best thread in months.

You're absolutely right. I should have never tried to put a no-content post like this in the rigorous, peer-reviewed library of serious work that is OOT.

Re: James Bond and Hold\'em Part II

Yeah, they switched it to holdem. Here's an obsessed fansite with more details.

1. This makes more sense. In the original novel, apparently Bond was some kind of "expert baccarat" player. Umm... bet on bank?

2. This is the high point of the cultural relevance of poker. Don't quit your day jobs.

Every time someone makes a statement like this, pkr has its cultural relevance extended by a few days. Its just the way fads work. People swore disco was 'here to stay'. and they swore that cars were a fad.

Yeah. Essentially, the leader of some big union (which funded commies on the quiet) borrowed the union funds, lost a bit gambling, and rented his own table at teh casino to make it back. He's slowly getting it back, but if Bond can break him - the union/commies are broken, and France is saved. or something like that.

I recommend the book - a white-hot read (though a little dated now), and in the last few pages, you find out why he never really gets attached to women AND why he's such a cold-hearted badass, especially to the enemies of England.

I'd be really surprised if they keep anything resembling the ending since it's completely non-hollywood plus Bond takes a pretty serious beating...

Not like they've ever completely changed any of the stories (Spy Who Loved Me) before....

Blarg 10-14-2005 10:13 PM

Re: James Bond and Hold\'em Part II

Yup eventually they used little more than the title. In The Spy Who Loved Me, they did exactly that, as I recall. It was originally about an insurance fire in a small motel, and the girl in the title was the motel clerk whom the thugs planned to burn along with the motel, but Bond -- James Bond, specifically -- saves her.
