French cuffs on dressy casual shirts
|
Re: French cuffs on dressy casual shirts
I voted stupid because french cuffs are not something I would normally where. If I did it would most likely be out of an attempt to be something I am not.
However I think there are guys who could pull them off and qualify as pimp. |
Re: French cuffs on dressy casual shirts
i think it can be done tastefully. as long as the shirt isnt too flashy, otherwise its like having top shelf whiskey in your jack 'n coke.
|
Re: French cuffs on dressy casual shirts
I think a lot of how pimp it looks depends on the cuff links/knots you wear.
EDIT: I just looked at the page in your link, apparently all those shits have buttons. In that case I think it's just stupid. |
Re: French cuffs on dressy casual shirts
I think it works well with colorful shirts, but doesn't look good on more conservative type shirts. The one on the top right of the Banana Republic page would look good if you can pull it off, but would look terrible if you can't pull it off. Don't see much middle ground.

Re: French cuffs on dressy casual shirts
I tend to reserve french cuffs for more formal occasions. I can say with certainty that I've never worn them without a suit. If you would wear one of those shirts with a suit, then by all means, get the french cuffs rather than button cuffs. Also, invest in quality cuff links.

Re: French cuffs on dressy casual shirts
A couple of clarifications.
First off, french cuffs are like the cuffs on a tux shirt. No buttons, you use cuff links. This is pictured in the second link I gave if you cursor over point #3. Secondly, I guess I was mainly expecting to hear from people who think it's a normal option to wear french cuff shirts with suits. In a number of places, especially NY/Europe/Asia, it is almost standard to wear french cuff shirts with suits. But a lot of people who wear these shirts to work every day think it's crazy to wear them when not wearing a suit. And their head explodes at the idea of a dressy casusal french cuff shirt and jeans. Just a little background... |

its like having top shelf whiskey in your jack 'n coke. [/ QUOTE ] I think that's a great analogy. While some people might be able to pull the look off, I really don't think that any occassion where a french cuffed shirt should be worn would qualify as casual. |
Re: French cuffs on dressy casual shirts
I think I much prefer barrel cuffs on any shirt I wear. but you're kind of a baller, Diablo, so you might be able to pull off the French cuff look. not for me, though.

If I had a dollor for every time I've thought about this question....

Re: French cuffs on dressy casual shirts
Pimp no doubt, as long as the cuff links arent too over the top.

Re: French cuffs on dressy casual shirts
stupid.
also, if banana republic think buttons and loud big stripes make for a classy shirt they are severly mistaken. i just see so many people go out wearing ugly striped shirts, ugh. |
Re: French cuffs on dressy casual shirts
I'm a huge fan of French Cuff shirts as are most girls I know. Most are rather impressed. It is the little details that can make all the difference in appearance.
French cuffs = Totally PIMP |
Re: French cuffs on dressy casual shirts
I didn't care much for those shirts, french cuffs or not.
|
Re: French cuffs on dressy casual shirts
I saw some guy win a tourny on TV a week ago or so. He had the look you describe. Jeans, white shirt and reeeeally flashy cuff links. I usually wear BR or A&F shirts. I think the look that works best is if the cuffs are folded back and no links. I was actually thinkng about getting a couple of french cuff shirts. 'Cause, you know, I'm pimp.

You just pop out the buttons and replace with a pair of cuff links. |

Re: French cuffs on dressy casual shirts
I bought this one http://www.bananarepublic.com/Asset_...2-00p01v01.jpg the other day, not knowing it had french cuffs. (I was in a hurry for a shirt and just grabbed one).
I don't wear suits. Appropriate to wear this out? With Jeans? Khakis? Black pants? I only have one set of cufflinks and they are not flashy or anything. They are just metal with some industrial looking rivets in them. |

Re: French cuffs on dressy casual shirts
thats a great example. the other thing i hate are those (eurotrash) short sleeve shirts that are really tight and skin fitting, a lot of the time the have an imprint on them thats like a paint imprint, or some other stupid graphic. they also have a different material that gives the shirt two layers, and sometimes there are rips in it. this i hate. anyone know what i mean? its a big pet peeve, i'll look for an example.

Re: French cuffs on dressy casual shirts
I'd definitly buy at least one of those shirts to wear out with a nice pair of jeans. I'd probably need to see those cuffs for myself before I shelled out any cashola, I don't understand what's tweaked about them.

Re: French cuffs on dressy casual shirts
this whole argument is dumb
i dont even think of the striped shirt beef as being a metrosexual thing, at all |
Re: French cuffs on dressy casual shirts
The only hard part is finding cufflinks to work with a more louder shirt. I like the french cuff striped shirts with a button or the cloth balls for links, once in a blue moon (bachelor party/stripclub etc) I will wear this type of shirt with jeans.
It's iffy. |
Re: French cuffs on dressy casual shirts
Pimp, and it's not close. If your two options are 1) what everybody else does cuz they're sheep, and 2) something unusual yet still stylish, then there's not really two options, is there?

Re: French cuffs on dressy casual shirts
I know plenty of people, including myself, who wear french cuffs without a suit. This was, at least in my case, borne out of necessity because after many corporate offices circa 2000 switched over from suits to business casual, I had all these french cuff shirts I still wanted to wear.
That being said - I think cuff links (even cloth / silk knots) look cheesy on casual fit shirts (e.g. these Banana Republic shirts, which are not fitted but come in S/M/L etc.). There is a certain formality to french cuffs that I think require a fitted dress shirt. Looks wrong to me on a casual fit shirt. |

Are knots the same thing as studs (ie: used in place of buttons down the front of your shirt)? [/ QUOTE ] A couple of people have already chimed in on this, but knots are like cuff links (at least in function). The pictures posted earlier in this thread should explain them pretty well. I think if you were going to wear a french cuffed shirt in a casual setting knots would look better unless you had a fairly simple (basic, non-flashy) pair of cuff links, even if you do I think I'd still prefer knots. [ QUOTE ] Do you mean buttons down the front of the shirt? That is pretty standard when it comes to french cuff dress shirts you wear with a suit. These shirts do NOT have buttons on the cuffs, the pics just have make it look a bit like that, I guess as placeholders. I've only seen studs used w/ tux shirts, but I'm sure non-tux shirts like that exist as well. [/ QUOTE ] I meant the buttons on the cuffs. I didn't know they came just as placeholders (I don't have any frnech cuffed shirts) so I assumed it was some weird type of french cuffed shirt that I hadn't seen where you used buttons instead of cuff links, which would be prety stupid. I have also never seen a shirt other than with a tux that used studs instead of buttons down the front, I think that would be pretty stupid too. All in all I think these shirts look fine as long as you don't use a really over the top pair of cuff links. |
Re: French cuffs on dressy casual shirts
french cuff shirts with suit = very nice
french cuff shirts w/out suit = you might be trying a bit too hard not saying it can't be done, but I think it looks strange on a lot of people |
