I have to say that after watching all these classic WSOP episodes (1992 and up), that I really prefer listening to Gabe Kaplan and Phil Helmuth over Lon and Norm. At least both of these guys know poker. Lon knows poker somewhat from doing broadcasts but Norm only knows ex-wives and Helmuth jokes.

Gabe and Phil and so much better than Lon and Nrom. I would even take Gabe with Lon, but for gods sake ESPN needs to GET RID OF NORMAN CHAD!!!!

I would like to win a WSOP event not for the money, not for the bracelet, but for the sole purpose of telling Norman Chad how unfunny he is!

Missed the first couple, but now I have the TiVo running overtime. Love these old broadcasts.

I think the funniest thing I've seen in a long time is Phill Helmuth getting his head shaved. That 2002 WSOP is such a epidose worth watching!!! LOL

I like the whole players signing the felt in front of their seat bit. They should bring that back.

You think small, you should win the WSOP to figure out how much money it would cost to have Norman Chad allow you to kick him square in the nuts on national television.

Lon sounds too phony to me, he is much much worse than Norman Chad. At least Norman Chad likes poker, Lon sounds like whatever, anything can happen and I dont really care cause I dont really care about poker. Thats just how he sounds to me.

Gabe Kaplan + Mike Sexton = Dream Team Poker Announcing Team.

I also hate Vince Van WashedUpActor.

If Mike would just quit teaching the newbies that when they raise that it's a "RERAISE!!", then we'd be all set. Man I want to kick him in the nuts every time I hear RERAISE! when there was never a raise.

Is it just me or does anyone else think that if Varconi didnt win the world series he would have made the news by going postal. I mean if you saw when he won, he had been recently fired from his job and for some reason everyone seems to ignore the guy. No one ever mentions he was the first amateur to win, not moneymaker. Im just saying the fact that he won probably saved a few lives in the office where he used to work.

Moneymaker wasn't the first amateur to win, neither was Varkoyni.

See Hal Fowler.

Ok first amateur to win when we could see the hole cards.

The title of "first amateur to win the WSOP where the televised events featured hole cards" isn't really relevant enough to bring up.

I agree with that, but then again look at the big deal they made out of moneymaker. I mean his win really boosted poker. Thats why I thought it mattered.

I tuned in just in time to see Helmuth getting his head shaved. Why did they do that? Did he lose a bet or something?

At the beginning of the broadcast (maybe 1/4 in) he says if Varkoni wins then he would shave his head. They let Robert do it instead!
