How did I do?

Villain here is loose passive 38/0/0.6 over 37 hands. OK, he may not have gotten any hands recently, but he's no LAG.

Dee, nothing more to say about this hand. Being the avid poster that you are, Im sure you expected everyone to say bet the river. So I would like to know your reasons for checking the river. Betting the river is the right play in my opinion.

Re: How did I do?

of course, bet the river. I have top pair with a decent kicker and nothing too ugly has happened. But I'll let it run to see if others speculate in any way as to why I didn't.

And then I'll rabbit on a bit

You think he is so passive that he would never bet into you on the flop without a hand that beats top pair?

I don't get it.

do you believe he's so passive that he will only call the river with AQ or AK ?

I'm still confused.. bet?

River is a bet. Even if you are beat, you probably aren't getting raised. I'm no pokertracker expert (I just got it), but 37 hands doesn't seem enough to make a good judgement on the level of his play.

Re: How did I do?

apparently you think his flop donk is indicative of a draw... busted flush doesnt pay off, QJ makes the nuts.
just bet... alot of heart draws made a K on the end and pay off.. he sucks... he could easily have A4 here. if he checkraises, he clearly has the nuts, so its not like youre losing two bets. checking the river here in an internet ghame is clearly wrong. sry.

You're outthinking yourself here. The river is a very easy value bet, even against someone with his stats. Don't forget that this guy is loose, so he'll call you with lots of stuff.

But my guess is that you're going to tell us that he had QJ, so you're congratulating yourself on having checked behind.

results and thoughts

so anyway at the river, he's just a couple of seconds in acting. (this is relevant to the hand but not to the real point I am getting to. stay with me here). So it looks to me like he has to think about something.

He had limped pf before, so I had no way to put him on any particular hand.
flop, he's clearly got something - either a draw or a hand. He dutifully checks into me at the turn, and calls straight away. So he's more likely on a draw, but who knows. He is still interested in staying around.
At the river, as I said he pauses, and for longer than if he simply missed his flush draw which would be an auto-check. The K makes QJ nuts, or AK that beats me (is he really passive?), or KT or K9 twopairs. All possible hands. So I thought I was likely being set up for a check-raise. So I check behind.

Villain tables QJo nuts and his hand is Good.

And I laugh at the screen and say "ha! just as I predicted" and believe for 3 seconds I'm a fantastic online player.

(If you haven't already guessed, this post is a tribute to the Diablo <-> BarronVangorToth thread in the magazine.)

So the real question is, am I being results oriented? Obviously I would normally bet there but my read was good. So I checked.

But Villain could have been drinking his coffee with A6 or QT! The trouble with results are that they might reinforce a duff instinct. I genuinely don't know the position.

I guess the answer is to be scrupulous about recording such reads and see if actions (where contrary to normal tag play) based on such 'reads' are profitable. (although when it means folding where calling would normally be correct, I'm not gonna know....)

I won't be writing to the magazine with it, although to credit BVGT he certainly generated a debate.
