Phil Hellmuth out!
Phil had his opponent cornered. He had QQ, the other guy had JJ and went all in before the flop for 300k. Phil, with 400k, had him covered. The other guy got there on the river. Phil was 4.5 to 1 favorite pre-flop, and was up to 22 to 1 favorite on the turn. Ouch! Next hand, Phil goes all in with his remaining 90k with AK. Got called by TT. No help. Phil's out. I don't envy Phil's pain. Short term luck rules.
Reminder: I predicted yesterday that Amir will win it all this year. |
Re: Phil Hellmuth out!
Tough luck for Phil. I might have more sympathy for him if he didn't think he was God's gift to the poker world. Go Phil Ivey

I feel terrible...
I'm sick to my stomach just thinking about... the 129384 whiney Card Player articles Hellmuth's going to write about his bad luck and his opponents bad play.

Re: Phil Hellmuth idiot!
who cares!? the guy's a complete imbecile who's negative "brat" tude is a stain on all of poker. and when was the last time he won a major tournament?
if everyone would just shut up about him maybe he'll go crawl back under the rock he came out from under. there are many other tournament stars around who are more attractive, more inteligent, and all-around better spokespersons for our game. |
Re: Phil Hellmuth idiot!
and when was the last time he won a major tournament?
I certainly don't condone the guy's immature actions, but he did win 2 more bracelets this year - I am convinced he has some skills (he's won 9 now) - I hope he takes this loss with some maturity and class. He should be one of the games ambassadors, and it is unfortunate that he has not always lived up to that to this point. |
Re: Phil Hellmuth idiot!
i may be wrong and he may have won some big stud event or something w/ several hundred entrants, but id guess most of his bracelets are things like 50 entrant $2k buy in razz events or some such nonsense.

Re: Phil Hellmuth out!
That is brutal. It's a good thing this is a tournament or Phil would go on tilt and blow off some serious cash. Imagine playing great for 3+ days and losing most of your chips on a 2 outer against an opponent who you clearly had good control over.
Say what you want about his personality, but there is no doubt Phil is a great tournament player. |
you are making a fool of yourself
I don't know PH and I've never played with him but it's not hard to look up results.
Won the $2500 buy-in Limit HE 4/26 for $171,400. 3rd in the $1500 Limit Omaha for $15,800. 6th in $3000 Limit HE for $15,040. Won $3000 No Limit HE for $410,860. and of course in the money in the big one and one brutal beat away from being a final table lock. It's pretty damn obvious the guy is a great tournament player. |
Re: Phil Hellmuth idiot!
Mike,
You're dead wrong here: 1989 Phil Hellmuth Championship Event $755,000 1992 Phil Hellmuth Limit Hold'em $188,000 1993 Phil Hellmuth Limit Hold'em $138,000 Phil Hellmuth No Limit Hold'em $161,400 Phil Hellmuth No Limit Hold'em $173,000 1997 Phil Hellmuth Hold'em Pot Limit $204,000 2001 Phil Hellmuth JR. No Limit Hold'em $316,550 2003 Phil Hellmuth Jr. Limit Texas Hold'em $171,400 Plus one more somewhere in there this year. The guy may be a prick, he may be this, that, or the other...but it's not like he's winning the 5 entrant razz event and ladies' 1/2 hold 'em 1/2 stud every year, the guy's a LHE and NLHE *tournament* madman. Dan P.S. This isn't supposed to be vindication for Phil or anything, but dude's a tournament genius. |
Re: Phil Hellmuth out!
Ivey is out in 10th, damn him (my last pick left in, and I was about to lay him off on a UK betting exchange when the final table prices went up). Lost something like 500,000 on one hand.

Re: Phil Hellmuth idiot!
I think Phil is great for Poker. His persona gets people interested, if for no other reason than they want to see him lose. For a sport or a game to gain popularity, you don't just need solid role models, you also need controversial talented bad guys. It's all about theater.

"the guy's a complete imbecile who's negative "brat" tude is a stain on all of poker."
--Actually, I think he's extremely good for poker, particularly from the perspective of attracting new fans. Case in point: He's the ONLY player on WPT that my wife can immediately identify, only because she can't stand him. He's a classic heel, and a lot of fun to root against. In other words: Phil is great for poker like Bobby "the Brain" Heenan was great for wrestling. |
Re: Phil Hellmuth idiot!
Not 100% positive...but I beleive all 9 of his bracelets have come from Holdem events.

Re: Phil Hellmuth idiot!
CLEARLY he has some anger issues...but hey, he's been good for poker; he's been on CNBC talking about the WSOP recently and surprisingly didn't sound like a complete lout...his book isn't GREAT but it's a good colorful layman's/amateur's alternative to the somewhat aging books by some others. and i've played him on UB and at least on the internet, he's a pretty gracious guy and doesn't sneer at starchasers, etc.
he's a good player...chill on the trash! |
