do you have a song that makes you sad...

but you keep listening to it?

What is it?
Why is it sad for you? (I'll take any 'sad' song or C & W as read)
And why do you keep listening to it?

Re: do you have a song that makes you sad...

Adagio-Albinoni. It is sad to me because it brings up childhood memories of my mom playing it for me. I miss that. I keep listening to it because it is just a beautiful piece and sometimes sadness is not a bad feeling.

"American Pie" by Don McLean and "Cat's in the Cradle" by Harry Chapin.

I think everybody thinks the first one is sad and the second reminds me that I don't always take enough time for some people.

And I keep listening because they're good songs.

Re: do you have a song that makes you sad...

Okay,

mine's an old song, don't think it got to the USA - 'paris match' by the Style Council

it's a song about regret, longing and thinking on things that have passed or cannot be.

It makes me think of the things in my life that I regret, have missed or lost, and is sad, sublime, and nostalgic all at once. Remembering them can sometimes be sweet.

I feel bad for you. Saw Floyd do this in an outdoor concert on an island in the middle of the Rhine river and this song brings a smile to my face whenever I hear it.

For me it's Tears In Heaven and Life By The Drop.

I still listen to them because they're good songs.

Smoke Rings in the Dark, by Gary Allan. Played it as a blind request at a wedding I DJ'd once (bad, bad idea, my first wedding ever), my girlfriend refuses to listen to it because it's so weepy.

Don't really listen to it all the time or anything but:

Mazzy Star - "Fade into You"

First song I heard after I saw my grandmother for the last time and I *knew* it would be the last time.

"Ashokan Farewell," from Ken Burns' Civil War. As previously posted, that series and I have a strange relationship.

"Only Love Can Break Your Heart" by Neil Young recalls a profound sense of pre-wedding existential angst.

Re: do you have a song that makes you sad...

Echoes is a fantastic song. It provokes a weird feeling in me... some of it sadness, some of it just nostalgia. It's like the song that defines the period of my life where I "came of age" or something like that, so it's a weird mix of emotions for me. But I love hearing it.

I think "From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea" by The Cure probably makes me sadder than most. It reminds me of a time of life where I had some good friends that I no longer have. Plus the song is sad as hell too.

Winter by Tori Amos. If you know the song and your father is in his golden years, the reasons probably are obvious.

I mean what I say literally. The wedding was at the end of July, in beautiful Louisville, KY. Lot of conflicted feelings about that one.

Re: do you have a song that makes you sad...

Bad Moon Rising by CCR. I was dating my friends sister. (he was fine with it). Anyway one day me and him and a few other guys were suppose to go on a road trip but at the last minute I cancelled. An hour or so after i was suppose to leave with the guys me and Jana (my buddys sister) had just come out of a store and got into my car. The radio came on and Bad Moon Rising by CCR was playing and all of a sudden I got a wierd feeling. Turns out my friends had all been in a car accident and my best friend (her brother) was the only one who was killed. So to this day it is a song that makes me very sad, yet I like to listen to it because of him. He was a cool mf and I do miss him alot.

When my ex couldn't describe in his own words how remorseful he was over the breakup... he sent me a cd with this song about a year ago. I still get welled up & have to turn off the radio whenever it comes on.

'O mio babbino caro' from Puccini's Gianni Schicchi.

It just sounds so sad it reminds me of every sad thing that's ever happened to me.

(Oh dear daddy

Oh dear daddy
I love him, he is so handsome
I want to go to Porta Rossa
to buy the ring
Yes, yes, I want to go there
And if my love were in vain
I would go to Ponte Vecchio
and throw myself in the Arno
I fret and suffer torments
Oh God, I would rather die
Daddy, have pity, have pity)

This is the more interesting part of this thread. I think sadness is an addictive kind of feeling. There's a kind of perverse joy in misery sometimes, especially nostalgic sadness.

I find the classical/instrumental responses very interesting. For me it's the lyrics that really do it for me. Although Beethoven's Violin Concerto does it for me a little bit. When I was a kid, this was the song my mom always played before she went out on dates after she and my dad broke up.

This one's actually up there for me, not because of the song itself or its lyrics, but because my mom would always have this tape playing in the car when she was taking me somewhere when I was really young. Just reminds me of those indelibly happy, carefree days of childhood.

The Dies Irae from the Requiem. Pretty much sums up the fury of grief.

Edit: I'm not at all religious, but I listen to the Requiem around the anniversary of my father's death each year. It's cathartic.
